'The Ghost Writer' conspiracy - Was Amelia Blye another C.I.A. agent ?
Once Ewan's character went to see Tom Wilkinson's character at home in his lair, he was marked for death, because he was getting too close to the truth. Therefore, it's not implausible that it took place at the party, because the message code break did not cause the hit, it was planned long before.
After all, Wilkinson's character ran a "security" agency and his blokes followed Ewan in the BMW to the ferry and tried to deal with him there, as they had with McAra, but he outsmarted them by getting off the ferry.
By the time of the party, we see that Bly has engineered his presence there by inviting him as her special guest---as Ewan points out ghost writers NEVER attend the book party because it's just not done for obvious reasons--the author doesn't want to parade his/her writing inadequacies in public! But Bly got him there anyway.
We now have to wonder which side Bly is on? Is she also in cahoots? We don't know.
Another poster wrote this theory and it seems plausible
Amelia Blye must have had some deeper motivation to invite 'The Ghost' to the party. She could have been a CIA agent that influenced PM Adam Lang, just like his wife Ruth Lang. That would suggest that the whole 'cat fight' between her and Ruth was staged as a game to mislead other people ? (Emmett used to like stage acting...)
Or maybe Amelia and Ruth didn't know that they were both agents hired to manipulate Lang? (Emmett could have recruited them individually...)
Or maybe only Amelia was an agent, not Ruth: Her expression when confronted at the end by the 'Ghost' is ambiguous and no hard 'proof'. Mike McAra's theory, written in the 'beginnings' could have been a misunderstanding: Maybe he was wrong and it wasn't Ruth?
Last but not least, there could be no CIA agents or conspiracies at all. The 'Ghost' was simply paranoid, some people were late for the ferry, and he had an accident at the end? (We saw the 'Ghost' before nearly having an accident when using the bike on Martha's Vineyard...)
Conclusion: The movie's crazily ambiguous and can be read several ways
a) There is a CIA conspiracy to manipulate the British PM: It killed the 'Ghost'
-It involves only Amelia Blye (and Emmett)
-It Involves only Ruth Lang (and Emmett)
-It involves Amelia Blye and Ruth Lang (and Emmett)
b) There is no CIA conspiracy: The 'Ghost' simply got paranoid and died of an accident
