Why was Ewan's character so stupid?

Seriously? My god he was an idiot! I'm surprised he wasn't killed off long before the ending. There was obviously something very sketchy about Ruth, but he just tells her everything he's discovered and sleeps with her? Then he goes to visit Professor Emmett poking his nose around, gets followed by 2 guys and rings a random number telling the person on the end of the line his exact location! I mean, really? Are we expected to believe that someone who is this suspicious, and whose predecessor died mysteriously would behave so carelessly? And then the ending, he just lets Ruth know that he knows and expects to walk out of the place alive. My god! What was the point in that?

reply

Yeah, his actions were pretty nonsensical for the most part.
btw
LOVE the scene where he screams at Brosnan to admit everything and names THE INTERNET as his source for top secret informations! :)

reply

Haha... I noticed it too. Why didn't he inform his agent or someone else about his discoveries. That way, the information could have been released if he died. The CIA would keep of his back, if they knew that secret information was waiting to be released if they killed him. The movie is really entertaining. But he is unrealistically dumb. Why didn't he shout out the information he discovered at the end?

Plotholes... so many plotholes.

reply

That ending is just a cherry on top of stupid.

reply

He was written TSTL in the book too. However. The success of the book was presumably based on Langs similarity to person still living. Plus. it peddles the bog-standard view of cia=root of all evil. Pretty good on that though.

>> Plus. it peddles the bog-standard view of cia=root of all evil.

If you are someone who believes the tools of evil can be used for good, than its not apparent that the CIA is evil
However,if you believe that good actions must come using good behavior and ethics, than the CIA is a tainted organization.

Id say it's a complex world. An eye for an eye usually leads to a cycle of violence, the film Munich does a good job at portraying how vile the intelligence community can be to even some of its most heroic, best agents-at the end of the film, the Mossad agent is essentially left out of any protection, his family could be killed in a reprisal at any time, and the only way his handler will help him if he continues to do insane missions for him....

Id say it's a complex world and it's definitely unclear but an eye for an eye usually leads to a cycle of violence, the film Munich does a good job at portraying how vile the intelligence community can be to even some of its most heroic, best agents-at the end of the film, the Mossad agent is essentially left out of any protection, his family could be killed in a reprisal at any time, and the only way his handler will help him if he continues to do insane missions for him....

However, in the case of Munich, the retribution on behalf of the Israelis was definitely justified as they had so many of their athletes slaughtered in front of the world. It's just that those people called to carry out the retribution really suffer in the process of carrying out vengeance and many end up dead, killed in counter-retribution.

Ostensibly Tony Blair, as he was PM from '97-2007, and the book was published in 2007.

reply

He wasn't stupid, he was just at average intelligence level in my opinion, as he said in the beginning "I know nothing about politics" so the Lang world is like a foreign country to him, it's thoing to be harder for him to piece it all together than a Jeremy Paxman analytical type.

reply

I second JACKDALY. The man was out of his depth in a world of intrigue and deceit.

reply

I agree. He was extremely intelligent, much more than anyone bargained for. Even if the GPS hadn't been preprogrammed (maybe the scariest part of the entire film), he had begun to search for the meaning of the photographs taped to the bottom of the drawer. Just because he wasn't wicked doesn't mean he was dumb.

reply

I disagree. He investigated something that people are obviously willing to kill to keep secret, as they in fact did even before he came onto the scene.

Despite doing nothing much to secure his own safety and indeed provoking even more danger, he apparently expected not to be killed. That is extremely unreasonable.

reply

I agree with that too. I think Ewan McGregor did an amazing job playing this ordinary guy who is stumbling into something he never expected, and who is clearly unable to think clearly in some situations. He really is no hero, but someone at least I can very easily identify with.

I used to have an X-Files quote in my signature.

reply

There's a misunderstanding concerning 'The Ghost's' actions at the end.

It was not stupidity, but necessity.

He wasn't 100% sure that he uncovered a secret conspiracy.
How could he be?
It's only a few words at the beginnings.
That proofs nothing.

So what did he do?
He did again what Rycard told him to do before speaking to Adam Lang on the plane.
He CONFRONTS Ruth Lang to get a REACTION, just like he confonted Lang before.

From her serious reaction he (and the audience) can tell, that he indeed
uncovered the truth.

HE NEEDED TO SEE HER REACTION TO BE SURE.

reply

Ok. But it is expected that he is going to now be silenced. In fact the wheels were already set in motion.

What did he expect to get in return for provoking a bunch of very dangerous people?

reply

Why was The Ghost so stupid? Because he wasn't a genius like you.

reply

the only stupid thing that he did is walking in the middle of the street at the end of the movie. but since i'm the only one who noticed that, i guess it's a very common kind of stupidity.

as for your accusations, they don't hold up, the prime minister was the prime suspect most of the time, and it was clear from the beginning that he's cheating on ruth with the blonde woman and that she knows, and ewan also noticed that. so, since brosnan is the prime suspect (strengthened by casting him, bond, intelligence agent) ruth seems a natural ally as a victim of brosnan.

i don't know if it's a bless or a curse, but intelligent directors can't trick you.

ewan is not careless, he would be if he didn't care for reaching the bottom of the truth, i would say he's brave, but you'de probably think that we are crazy. but for some of us truth is more precious than life sometimes.

it's clear that his death was arranged regardless of her knowing or not, or even he know about it or not, as a potential danger any way. cia don't let water pass under their feet (is this the right expression?)

reply

There was obviously something very sketchy about Ruth...
There is? Obviously?
...but he just tells her everything he's discovered...
She's the betrayed wife. He's a writer. He's been there for two days. He wants to coax her to tell him more. Of course he tells her what he's discovered. He needs confirmation.
...and sleeps with her?
Well! Of course that makes him stupid. No one with any intelligence would sleep with a woman who appears in his bed and then all but attacks him.
Then he goes to visit Professor Emmett poking his nose around, gets followed by 2 guys...
Oh, he's obviously stupid. Only a stupid person would go to Emmett's house without knowing that it's Emmett's house, and knowing that 2 guys are there to kill him. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
...and rings a random number telling the person on the end of the line his exact location!
Did you fall asleep during the film? The "random number" he phones is to Richard Rycart, former U.K. Foreign Minister.
_____
I don't have a dog. And furthermore, my dog doesn't bite. And furthermore, you provoked him.

reply

Once he guessed that his predecessor was most likely murdered, he knew he could be in danger, but he didn't really do anything to protect himself... quite the opposite... I wouldn't say he was stupid, but careless.
And I agree with the previous guy, getting Rycart at his motel when he doesn't know who's the good guy was a bet... that somehow sort of worked out.

reply

Well, Ewan should have known he was the protagonist in a political murder thriller. What a stupid git.
