Almost honest minus the ending

Two things impressed me about Sex Drive.

1) It puts the blame on Ian instead of the world around him. It shows that Ian's social awkwardness and lack of confidence/sexual aggression is why he sucks with women. Lance constantly reminds him that being a "nice guy" and a pu$$y gets you nowhere with women.

2) It attempts to actually be honest about the friend zone. My favorite line of the movie is "You know what I had in common with every girl I've had sex with? I wasn't friends with any of them." Then there is a great scene where Lance tells Ian he will never escape the zone.

But what ultimately disappoints about the movie in the end is that it wasn't true to its original message. It goes with the typical Hollywood sap.

I will somewhat disagree on your analysis of the ending. While it was a cliche result, it was only when Ian had given up on Felicia and started acting tougher (turning around on the highway, racing) when she did finally take notice of him romantically.

And to be in a lasting romantic relationship you need to be friends. I've never heard of a long relationship where only the sex was good and they weren't really compatible intellectually.

The ending sucked, nobody ever gets out of the friend zone, nobody.

I actually agree that two people in a relationship should be friends eventually. What I am disputing is that men and women can't start out as "friends first". There's a difference in the dynamic.

1) Two people meet, are sexually attracted, and become lovers. Then they get into an exclusive relationship, become closer and closer, and eventually wind up as friends over time. This is what the majority of couples who "married their best friend" are referring to.

2) A guy has a crush on a woman but is too scared to make a move. So he acts like her friend. Then eventually when his feelings come out, she only sees him as a friend and nothing more. Or a guy attempts to date a woman from the start, she isn't sexually attracted, and she "just wants to be friends". In either case, he has been put in the "friend zone" and is never getting out.

But what do all modern day TV shows and sappy romantic movies do? They make it seem like a #2 guy can get the girl eventually. But real life just doesn't work that way. Do guys get out of the friend zone? Once in a blue moon. But it is a very RARE exception.

Hey dude, wake up. Guy #2 can definitely get the girl, and there are a lot of such instances happening in real life.

They probably should have had a lot more trouble getting out of the friend zone. The first kiss could have been a lot more awkward. More believable if they first had to drink and then turn out all the lights.
