Beautiful, Intriguing, and Frustrating.

I found this film to be visually quite stunning. The protagonist was fascinating and trying to understand her was as well. She was very frustrating as you cannot believe she doesn't understand the situation the way every other character does. I loved the sparseness of the film as well. My problems with it were mostly due to me wanting more answers than the film was ready to divulge. This may have been my fault and maybe I should have just went along for the ride a little more. I really had a problem with the character of her son. I wanted a little more of an idea of what he was doing and why. Either way, I thought it was an unconventional and challenging film that I am glad to have viewed.

He signed the plantation away...and stood by while her son died. The plantation and her son were the two things keeping her together.

Regarding her son - his father went and had a new family so he was left with his mother, w ho adored & indulged him all his life and made no demands on him. He was aimless, incompetent on the plantation, left to idle away, and had no sense of power or worth. When he shaved his head he took on this new character of the rebel leader and finally found a purpose. You could see his joy when he stormed into the pantry with the local kids and led them to the stored provisions - now he had something to give.
