If dolls were supposed to be beautiful...
why the hell did they cast Alan Tudyk as Alpha? He's uglier than the east end of a horse headed west.

DISAGREE.
While I had never thought of Alan Tudyk in that way, I had also never seen him play a 'hot' character. I know I'm not the only one who was VERY pleasantly surprised at how attractive he could be, given the chance. Alpha was a total babe. A little unusual looking, but hey, I like unusual a hell of a lot more than those dead boring "standard hot-guy" types. Alan Tudyk has got character, he may not be everyone's type but he's definitely got something going on there.
"Soft...like a kitty."
I don't find him ugly, but then that's the whole point - one person's ideal will be different to someone else's. The dollhouse need a range of different looks to appeal to all their different clients. An example would be November, who wasn't stunning in the traditional Hollywood sense, but she was gorgeous nonetheless.

Wasn't he more or less a guinea pig? A convicted fellon turned into the first doll to see how it works?
Anyway, I didn't think of Alan Tudyk as attractive before (he didn't look like a horse's behind either, ts ts) but then the Bonnie and Clyde scene came along and holy sheet! You could scratch the semi from semi-muscular man after that, he was just oozing sexy!
Also: as ist has been pointed out above, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder and the dollhouse had to cover many different tastes. I for example would rather hire Alpha than Victor, mostly because half of the men in my family look like Enver Gjokaj. And the friend I recently showed Dollhouse to didin't get the appeal of Dichen Lachman.
"I think that God has got a sick sense of humour and when I die I expect to find him laughing."
^Exactly. Likewise, even though Echo was 'number 1' (and Whiskey before her), not everyone is gonna think that they're the best tail the Dollhouse has on offer. I really liked that they had a varied and interesting-looking cast, everyone was attractive in their own way, there was no "typical hot guy", and - best of all - no blonde bimbo (not in the main cast, anyway). Some of the random extra dolls were a bit less easy on the eyes, but still, at the end of the day, so long as there's some appeal there, you can see why it might be a worthwhile investment for the Dollhouse to have that Doll around.

Yes his half down syndrome look is not attractive and does reasonable the ugly parts of a horse
but, like someone said, he was the first, the test pilot, and they probably couldn't afford to find beautiful people for the test. Once they had him and he made some money they could prove the idea was sound and went on to collect beautiful people but they kept him in rotation for any old clients that liked him
Err, I dont really think about attractiveness of other men, but as far as I can tell, Wash is not more ugly or beautiful/handsome than the rest of the "dolls".
While Buffy at least had Michelle Trachtenberg, Alyson Hannigan and Emma Caulfield, there is absolutely no woman I consider irresistable on Dollhouse. None of them is really ugly, either, though. One probably should call them "interesting looking".
And thats exactly what Wash is, too.

I am definitely a Browncoat, though I dont know why my posting would have given a hint about that ?
But I think Joss Whedon prefers interesting looking people on all his shows.
Even if you dont find them attractive, they are in a general way even in their faces, and they are definitely very memorable and unique in their looks.

They thought you were a browncoat cause you called Tudyk "Wash".
What a lovely way to burn...
He's not ugly. But remember, the Dollhouse caters for people's fantasies, and everyone has different tastes. Victor is not my type personally, but he is very attractive. Whiskey's hot as, and Echo and November are both gorgeous too, but Sierra, on the other hand, isn't that great in my opinion. Kilo's cute too.
shareOf course the dolls are not only for romantic engagements, they are also used in other ways.
shareJust because he isn't your type doesn't mean he isn't anyone else's. The Dollhouse deals with fantasy. Miracle Laurie isn't exactly skinny but she's also there....there's not one set type of girl or guy that works for everyone.
I find Alan Tudyk quite cute.
"It's better to be hated for who you are than be loved for who you aren't."
Seriously? He is damn fine. I can get why some people wouldn't find his face as attractive in an opinion sort of way.
But his body is near perfection whether you find his facial features attractive or not.
I can't wait to tell my kids that Sm11th was my Doctor.
He will always and forever be Wash to me, too. And, at least in Dollhouse and the aforementioned Firefly, he is HOT! Even (or maybe especially) when he's all evil.
And dying when you're not really sick is really sick, ya know. Really!
I agree, melindack26; when he snapped from the paranoid stoner character into Alpha, I literally said "wow." ;)
In regards to the original post, I'd have to echo (no pun intended) what others have said: the dolls' attractiveness is something very much based on the eye of the beholder. For example, I think November is gorgeous, and Sierra kinda looks like an alien. ;)
