Who was sending messages to Ballard?

****MAJOR SPOILERS****

If you have not watched the entire series, do not read! just go watch it and enjoy!

First of all, one of the things I love most about this show, is the amazing character development of both Adele DeWitt and Topher Brink over the course of the show. It speaks to the goodness that is inherent in most humans. Adele starts off as the cold-hearted ice princess from hell who has no moral compass whatsoever, and Topher is just an unguided young man, exploring his own genius without regard for consequence. My, how they change.

I have seen many conjectures on the board about who was contacting Agent Ballard via Echo and November; including Langton, Dominic, Dr. Saunders, Ivy, and Topher. I have another idea about it.

Starting in episode 6, Man In The Street, the real story arc begins. Until this point, we have had a couple of overt hints at the real plot--(Alpha is mentioned, and Victor being a doll is revealed)--, and a bunch of bread crumbs that are nearly impossible to know about until you see how it all plays out, I.E. the different episode-of-the-week imprints given to Echo in the first five episodes..they end up being an important part of her skill set once she fully becomes self-aware.

In this same episode(6), a handler is discovered to be abusing Sierra in a major way. When Adele finds out, she is PISSED. In her conversation with Dominic and Langton she tells Langton that she NEEDED to give him the bonus for discovering who the culprit was. And then she tells Dominic while discussing what happened and who will be held responsible, "Your concern is touching, but my bags are not packed", also,

"As for the intrepid agent, tell Topher to prep Echo. I think they are ready for a second date". The resulting 'date' is the first time Ballard is contacted by a doll with a secret message.

I think this is the point where she <Adele> finally realized that what she was doing was totally wrong, and decided secretly to try to bring down the Dollhouse, and SHE was the one sending the covert messages. She sends Mellie on a kill mission for the bad rapist handler. Then after reviewing the tapes of the kill, she ends up saying, "I played a very bad hand [of cards] very well. There is a distinction" She then instructs Dominic to contact the other houses about what happened, and says it can't happen again. Anywhere.

I really think she realized it was a bad hand of cards she had been playing with all along, and decided to do something about it.

Later, in episode 9, A Spy in the House of Love, when Mellie is corrupted and delivers a message to Ballard, people have speculated about how few would have had access to the chair, to alter the imprint, in the small time frame when it could have happened. Adele was there, preparing for her engagement as Mrs. Lonely Hearts. On her second engagement as MLH shown later in the series, she has obviously become self-aware <to the viewer> that the whole idea behind the Dollhouse is flawed and irreparable, she is disgusted with herself, for lack of a better term, and cancels the engagements permanently.

Replies appreciated, I may well have missed something. There is a lot going on in this show.

Adelle didn't really make her about face until season 2.

It's never really made clear who sent Paul those messages. Might've been Dominic. Or maybe even Alpha.

You are correct, it was never spelled out. And your thoughts were mine also, upon the first re-watch. Now, I'm not so sure, via my post. Adele might have switched sides before we all knew about it, and just playing her cards close to the vest (no pun intended) She knew it wouldn't be an easy task take down the house.

I've rewatched Dollhouse three times. There's really nothing to indicate Adele switched sides in season 1. Right up until the end of that season, she still believed in the Dollhouse and what it was doing.

well, you disagree with my idea, then. My whole post was to indicate why she may have switched sides earlier than may have been revealed. Thanks though, and I hope others will reply as well, we all agree, it is an excellent show.

Thank goodness I watched the Sarah Conner Chronicles, it was the first glimpse I had of Summer Glau. What a beautiful woman! It led me to Firefly, and then Dollhouse. And to discover the Whedon-verse. Never could get into Buffy, too teeny for me, but I had a friend who used to rush home to catch the episodes. I may try to give it one more chance.

That's how and why I started watching . Dude, Summer is smokin' hot! I also agree that Buffy was a bit too teenybopper. I liked Firefly, but not massively so. It's been a while and now that I know more about Summer it might be worth rewatching.

She also played a memorable recurring character in The 4400. Well worth looking up.

I found your theory to be well considered. I cannot speak to its accuracy, of course, but the mosaic you made of the pieces is compelling. I am about to begin the series again after having not seen it since it aired. I will observe with your theory in mind, and I will very much enjoy doing so. I appreciate you sharing this.

On the one hand, I would expect that if your posited theory were so, that information would likely have been revealed as the loose ends were wrapped up. On the other hand, this sort of detail might have merely been overlooked in the crush and press of ending the series.

I am, however, completely certain of one thing: Joss Whedon would love to be asked this question at San Diego Comic Con in place of the millionth iteration of "When will Firefly get a sequel?"

reply

Thanks, killbot. I am not claiming that I am correct, after all its a fictional story with loose ends. How can anyone be correct, except the author! I stand behind my claim though, and I will offer one more piece to the mosaic..this all happened about the same time that Adele's drinking started going uphill.

NOW, if we could only get Joss to pry the rights to Firefly out of evil-Fox's hands...

I could have sworn Alpha said he "brought Ballard in" as part of his plan. I always took that to mean he was sending the messages.

The envelope with a pic of Caroline was Alpha pulling Ballard farther in. But the person who was in the Dollhouse sending messages thru the dolls to Paul (They would have to be physically in the building) was Dominic.

reply

It was Mr. Dominic from the NSA, He was tasked with making sure the technology didn't end up out to the general public.

I think Dominic wanted to bring down all of the Dollhouses without allowing the tech from getting out to the public.

IF you remember Adele sent Domanic to the attic when it was discovered he was leaking info to the FBI and the NSA
