What is this movie about?

Its looks like hitman movie trying to be artsy.

Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

It doesn't try to be artsy, but it tries to play with exactly what you stated... you see the pictures of the film and you follow what happens on screen, and you expect something specific (i.e. hitman movie) because of it, because basically every Hollywood movie is the same and you have figured out how they work. I saw it as mostly a commentary and criticism of today's mainstream cinema, where most movies are the same and you can tell from one screenshot what story is being told. Also, and completely unrelated, it has an overexaggerated attention to details that really makes you realise how much stuff you just ignore or blank out in everyday life.

If you like movies that reflect a little on life and cinema, you could like it. It's not 'artsy' in the sense of just stupidly trying to be different. I liked it very much and it actually changed my view on the world a little (not in the political sense). If, on the other hand, you like your movies to have a clear beginning and a clear, happy ending, and either (a) a love story or (b) blood and explosions, then the movie is not for you.

Also, it has gorgeous pictures and a wonderful soundtrack :D

Save your money and 2 hours of your life by avoiding this steaming pile
of crap dressed up as a film called Limits of Control. Read a book instead....that's what I should've done instead of wasting my time watching a film that made no sense and barely had any dialogue.

****possible spolier****

I have a theory that what we see is what's going on the mind of the main character who is undergoing treatment for a mental illness, or an operation for a physical illness.

The bit where he strangles Bill Murray is where he gets cured, or the malignant tumour is removed. The bit where he opens tha matchbox and finnds a blank slip of paper represents getting the all clear. And when he changes clothes at the end it represents going back to his normal life.
