Beautifully shot...
Seriously, beautiful cinematography. Brilliant use of red too, and some interesting set pieces, but come on - it's really not very good. A lot of interesting set pieces, and some stylish ideas ole Jim's wanted to get off his chest, shoved into some hotch potch narrative posing as a story. Things just happened without any logical connection, almost as if to test the patience or even alienate the audience. As a big Jarmusch fan - very disappointed! When the panopticon statue first made an appearance I really thought we were getting somewhere, but no.
The film seemed to take itself a hell of a lot more seriously than Jarmusch's other work too - much less humour than normal and the base level politics at the end, coupled with Murray's peformance, was plain embarrassing.
Either way, still an alright watch due to the performances (with John Hurt and Gael Garcia breaking up the tedium), beautiful cinematography and the sound design was great as well.
