to the fans of LOC...have you seen 'the american'??

i saw them both and it seemed there were some definate similarities....what do you think?

reply

I haven't seen The American yet, but from what I saw and read it does seem to share some traits. And quite a few reviews of The American mention Limits of Control.

reply

Both movies have been described as extremely
boring!(zzzzzzzzzzzz)lol.

But compared to this,THE AMERICAN is a
masterpiece!

reply

There are many similarities as far as plot and pace go, but emotionally - LOC makes The American look like Schindler's List.

reply

I saw about 75% of both and agree that they are both have suspense and ambiguity as well as strikingly framed imagery and cinematography of southern Europe.

However, I think The Limits of Control expresses these qualities to a greater degree.

reply

Seeing 75% of a movie is pretty much equivalent to seeing 0% of a movie. You have nothing of value to say about a movie you haven't really seen. And no, 75% doesn't count for anything.

reply

I disagree with you. Front to back with no interruptions is certainly the best way to experience a film, but I can think of dozens of films where seeing 75% of the film would allow you enough knowledge to talk about the film to a certain degree. Not authoritatively, but it would allow some ability to discuss the movie.

If you can watch three-quarters of a film and still have no ability to accurately articulate anything about that film, I would actually argue that the filmmaker is wasting your time with rubbish. You might be missing crucial details to fully understand the picture, but you should be able to know quite a bit. If not, the storytelling is just poor.

watched both and enjoyed the both. The problem with the american was the dependence of the killer of the woman... ^^ but it was quite a trip... I still prefer LOC :)

it's no contest for me...

-The American (2010) - 8/10 (in my Top 100-ish movies ever and is between my 4th-8th favorite movie of the current 2010's decade so far. i have seen this at least three times now. it's 6.3/10 average is definitely underrated in my mind as there is not many movies scored at that range or lower that stand out for me but this one does.)

-The Limits of Control (2009) - 6/10 (i actually just finished seeing this (on Sep 28th 2015) for my 2nd time)

both are slower paced movies with The Limits of Control being the slower paced of the two.

with that said... some people will think these movies are boring though given the way they are but i think The American is quite good as it's got a solid atmosphere to it along with Clooney's character (who's not playing his more usual suave self) that really carry it. i kind of see a bit of atmosphere in The Limits of Control but overall i only mildly like The Limits of Control.

Yeah I drew the same parallels Martytamu27. They're both very similar. Another movie that could sit comfortably between them is A Most Wanted Man (2014).
