So I'm reading that just the cost to pay the "Friends" was about $2.5 - 4 million each with an overall budget of like $20 million. Is this just marketing for having the series on the HBO Max platform now? Are they planning on making that money back in new subscriptions? Does anyone understand the finances of making a special like this?

I recall Netflix or HBO paying something like $100 million just to have the rights to air Friends on their platform. Also, the gigantic number of subscribers who stay just for Friends I think justifies the costs. Based on that, bringing them back for a reunion of 1h30min is just good marketing, people subscribed, stayed, they made their money back in no time.
