It's a moot point seeing as how your premise is based on the movie being an analogy to COVID, when what the movie ACTUALLY meant to address (per the writers themselves) was climate change.

The thing is, you can swap out the comet for just about anything that's threatening on a global scale. I think it mostly shines a light on this crazy polarisation we're having these days.
