Was it all an extremely unfortunate coincidence that there happened to be 2 envelopes and Christine picked the wrong one? Or could it perhaps be manipulated by the demon that was after her? The demon can after all move things about and make her imagine stuff that isn't real. I would have thought you'd notice from the feel of it that an envelope contains a button or not anyway.

It was simply an unfortunate coindidence.
When she got the coin out of her boyfriends printer, he put it in an envelope.
When Christine decided to give away her coat botton she also did it in an envelope.

When she was in the car with her boyfriend she got those envelopes twisted.
