Breezy

Was Alana was supposed to be reading for the role of Breezy (1973) in the scene with Sean Penn? Kay Lenz played the role of a hippy girl named Breezy who happens upon a middle aged divorced guy played by Holden.

Yes.

I believe that the lines are directly from the Breezy script. Breezy was released in 1973 so that puts things in roughly the same time period.

There is a reason for this: Gary in the movie is based on real life producer Gary Goetzman, who has co-produced movies with and for Tom Hanks right up to 2022's recent "A Man Called Otto."

Per PTA, many of the anecdotes in "Licorice Pizza" are from Gary's young life -- AND Gary indeed had an older girlfriend during this time AND she was...Kay Lenz. AND Kay Lenz helped the real Gary with his REAL waterbed business.

And so Alana Kane is kinda/sorta Kay Lenz.

And of course, Sean Penn's "Jack Holden" is William Holden(star of Breezy) under a different name..maybe because Jack Holdens career sounds like a mix of William Holden and Steve McQueen and the motorcycle stunt was really done at Tail of the Cock by...Evel Knievel in 1973 or so.

BTW, Breezy was directed by Clint Eastwood. He wanted to get away from action and thrills(Play Misty for Me.) Eastwood only does a Hitchcock-like cameo walk on in Breezy.
