For contrast, seek out the 2009 British three part series Unforgiven with Suranne Jones....much better..

I started watching this not knowing it was a remake of the three-part 2009 British series Unforgiven starring Suranne Jones.

Seek that series out, it is currently streaming - it is much better and with more development of several of the characters. Jones actually breathes more life into the main character while not turning the portrayal of the main character into the dour, one-note portrayal that Bullock turned in.

I watched the british 3 part miniseries and found it to be fantastic.

I loved the movie.

I just tried watching Unforgiven on BritBox... Jesus, why would you even recommend something like that? It's embarrassing!

The chatty, appreciative way Ruth is acting doesn't make any sense. The shell-shocked, sullen demeanor Sandra Bullock had was precisely the right direction to go - it was REAL.

The other characters are coming off as cartoonish. Zero context about the adoptive family provided prior to the car accident. And, I bet, not a single swear word in this made-for-TV crap?.. 🙄

I couldn't last 15 minutes, and would strongly caution anyone who's seen the movie against watching the series.

You know, if you want to try and engage people, I would suggest a bit of courtesy instead of the rude reply you made.

If it was so bad you only watched 15 minutes, you lack credibility in commenting on the three-part show.

In the future, if you can't be civil, please ignore my posts.

I feel that I made valid points about the show. [shrug]

I mean, by the same token your OP is very rude, since it's critical of the movie - don't you see the irony of what you are saying?

reply

Ok, I'm done with you. Your reply was rude, immature, and discourteous. And if you can't realize that, then you are not someone I desire to converse with.

And calling my OP rude is ridiculous. In no place did I insult people or make discourteous comments as you did. I pointed out that the three-part series is better than this movie and apparently, from other comments and reviewers, the consensus is the same as mine regarding the re-make.

reply

You are not exactly demonstrating yourself to be a logical or levelheaded interlocutor here.

Oh well. [shrug]

I didn’t see anything rude about your post. If one starts a critical thread, one has to be ready for some give and take in the replies.

I haven’t seen the British series but it probably plays better for a British audience. Just as this film probably plays better for an American audience. For instance, I didn’t see Bullock’s performance as “one note”. I thought she did a great job playing a hardened on the outside, yet fragile on the inside ex con. She behaved like someone who had been in “the (US penitentiary) system” for 20 years.

Thank you!

Also, I notice that people often rely on their impression of something from 10+ years ago, but with all the abundance of quality series that came out since then, the perception NOW is very different.

Only person I see being rude here is you TruMovieFan. exatera didn't insult you what so ever or your opinion. He/she just simply gave their view on the show you brought up here, and now you're clearly (and rudely) dismissing them just because what he or she said doesn't match with what you think. To quote the movie "Life goes on".

You're on here telling other people to forget about this modern version and go watch some British version just because it's better in your opinion. Is that not rude to the film maker? Guess you couldn't careless about that huh? nope. Anyway you carry on watching what you enjoy and others are going to do the same.

I just finished watching this movie a moment ago (which is why I came here obviously) and I enjoyed every moment of it. Goodbye now.

Well, if you call the line, "Jesus, why would you even recommend something like that? It's embarrassing!" polite and courteous then your manners are different than mine.

On top of that, the person only watched 15 minutes of the three-part series and felt to offer opinions on something not even seen. Then added wonder why anyone would even watch such crap. So I guess suggesting one that liked the British series has taste for "crap" is also not insulting.

So, to me, comments such as that are undeserving of further attention.

Feel free to ignore my posts in the future if you so desire. I won't mind.

Than you really shouldn't post on internet review boards because 9 times out of 10 there's always going to be some words like that within these brutally honest reviews that people post on sites like this. Yours is no better considering again that you're on here telling others to forget about this and go watch the 2009 British version.

Followed by you "rudely" dismissing everyone to "ignore you" just because you're clearly incapable of taking in what the other people has to say and actually remaining on topic of what you brought up in the first place. The Show. So yeah, that's your problem pal. When it comes down to it 15 minutes is long enough for most people to find out what the main story of a TV Show or Movie is going to be about, and it's enough time for most to make a decision on whether or not the characters and their relationships with one another is worth learning more about within that time frame. If none of this grabs the viewers interest by then than yeah. They're more than likely going to flip the channel or turn it off. Don't like it? too bad. That's the reality of the entertainment world. It's why a show can last over 10 seasons or getting cancelled as early as just 1 full season or even after just a couple of aired episodes. Goodbye now.

Are you comparing a modern big budget Netflix production with a Hollywood star against a modest UK tv series made back in 2009?

reply

Me? No, I am not comparing them.

But the OP stated that the British original was superior, hence my incredulous reaction.

reply

After watching this movie I watched the series, and agree it was fantastic. Much better story as told over a series.
