I saw the movie 2 days ago & keep thinking about it. It seems to me that while the baby’s death was the catalyst for the marriage to fail, Martha & Beard seemed such a mismatch: he’s scruffy and sloppy (he wears his glow-taped work jacket everywhere), & lacks grace, she’s a well-manicured trendy dresser (pre baby death); he’s blue collar & she works in an office. They evidently hadn’t come to an agreement as to the spelling of the baby’s name. I wondered if Martha was attracted to him mostly because her mother wouldn’t like him.
Her mother was so manipulative: arranging the lawsuit; having the headstone made without the mother’s input; paying Beard to go away forever; telling Martha that if she’d had the baby in the hospital as her mother had advised, she’d be “holding her baby right now. “ I even think she bought the van for them so that they would feel obligated to her.
And when Martha ran into that woman she didn’t even recognize to whom Mother has “told “everything. “ Martha was right – The worst thing about the baby’s death to her mother was that was the appearance that her daughter had failed. And all that “we pulled ourselves up by the bootstraps and did everything we had to do
