Good movie, but feels rushed

Anyone else feel this way?

Rarely do I think a movie is too short--far too often I think movies are too long--but in this case I really think the film could've benefited from an extra 30 minutes. It almost feels like two different movies jammed into one: the first being Damian's rise and the second being Adonis's quest to set things right.

Both of these storylines needed expansion in this film for the pay off to feel fully satisfying. It's totally unrealistic for Damian to get a title shot with no professional record, so there should've been some scenes with him training and taking at least 3 or 4 fights before Adonis is convinced to work him into a title shot. And then once Damian is champion, we should've gotten more scenes of Damian taunting a brooding Adonis before Adonis decides to fight him.

Don;t know if rushed it the word but I definitely would have liked to have seen more of a personal journey from Damion as well in the second half. Seemed like it mostly centered on Creed. But like you said, good movie overall.

If you're interested, I reviewed the movie here. Trying to get better and always looking for feedback.- https://youtu.be/Do_K9RvB4oU

There's too much left unsaid even in the first half.

For instance, how did Damian keep his skills sharp during 18 years in prison? Was he in a prison boxing league?

How did he prepare for the fight against Chavez? All we see him do is punch a bag a few times and spar once against Chavez himself.

The film would've been better if Adonis told Damian that he had to take a few fights to get ranked and Damian agreed. And then we see Damian training and see his fight fight. And then the next few fights could've been a montage. And only then do we see some backroom dealings and negotiating between fighters and agents, with Damian only then finally getting the title shot.

Also theres a scene in the trailer that shows a prison fight and it wasnt in the movie smh! hate when they do that hope it will be on the bluray!

reply

I felt that way too. I expected a montage of Damian moving his way up to a title shot or maybe a string of title defenses, but nope he just fought the two matches.

I still liked it though...

reply

Yes, exactly. It was totally unrealistic how a dude with no fights was able to just say, "Yeah, I want a title shot" and get it. They should've taken the time to show him training for his first fight, then him winning his first fight, and then a montage of him winning 3 or 4 more fights in devastating fashion. Then after some backroom dealing and negotiations he gets his title shot. That is much more believable.

Also it's never explained how he kept up his skills in his prison. Was he part of a prison boxing league? Who knows. They never tell us.

Agree 100%. He got the money, the fame, and titles all in a matter of one fight. From the looks of it he was living just as good as Adonis. I wonder if expanding the runtime to flesh out these plot points or if eliminating the significance of Adonis' daughter would've been enough?

I usually have a natural aversion to watching movies that are over two hours, but if the story is engrossing then it can work. A great example is Walk the Line, which is a little over two hours, and I was actually ANGRY when it was over because I was enjoying it so much.

I was liking this film enough that I think a little more to the story would've been welcomed, even if that meant increasing the run time by 20 or maybe even 30 minutes. I think that the scenes with Adonis and his daughter added some needed heart to the story so I didn't mind them.

Yeah it's just poor writing for Damian to get a shot, no matter what way you look at it. Creed tries to reference Rocky v Apollo 1 in the film, which was extremely unrealistic too, as to why the fight would sell. However, Rocky was a pro boxer with a crappy record while Damian has yet to have a single professional fight. It's the weakest part of the film by far and easily could have been resolved with maybe an extra 5 minutes of montages mix in here and there of Damian knocking dudes out in the first round with ease to build up rep.

reply

Yes, and we actually see Rocky being a pro boxer for a little while before he is offered the fight with Apollo.

Here's how I think they should've handled it:

- show Damian to take his first pro fight
- hype the first fight and show it in full, with Damian winning
- show a montage of Damian winning three more fights in devastating fashion
- show Adonis agreeing to work Damian into the title shot

Where this gets complicated is that Chavez was also part of Adonis's stable of fighters. It's difficult to just move Chavez to a different gym and manager though, because then Adonis has no power to grant the title shot. As far as I can see it, this has two solutions: One, have someone else within the gym who is not involved with training Chavez train Damian. Or two, move Chavez to a different gym/manager and show Adonis using his negotiating skills to convince Chavez and his manager to accept the fight.

Where were you when they were writing the screenplay lol? I honestly thought it would play out like while watching in the beginning.

Good movie Nope
Rushed Nope.

This is typical trash we see from Hollywood now.

Nothing in this movie makes any sense even down to the food eaten (fighters don't eat junk food as shown in this film)
