Didnt meet the hype....
Was a good movie, but I don't think it lived up to the hype. Id recommend watching it.

shareI liked it, I support it, I recommend people see it, but I sort-of agree.
I keep comparing it to Valhalla Rising and I much preferred that film - it was more surprising, mysterious and soulful. This felt a bit thin (much like The Lighthouse - another overrated piece from Eggers) and the spiritual visions were too talky and slowed things down.
I also wonder if the film needed to sit with Skarsgaard more, and show more vulnerability. He was kind of an invulnerable terminator, hacking his way through his revenge mission.
I wonder if the colour-bleached digital photography didn’t lend a sterility also, things never feel as grimy and alive as film, no matter how much mud is on screen.
Still, it’s a wonderfully brutal 2+ hours with zero wokeness. That alone should have you renting/buying it ASAP.
I agree, can’t wait to see what Eggers does next.
shareApparently, "Nosferatu".
