Action, fantasy, romance, horror, and drama all put together, too ambitious for my taste.
And that dialogue, of course nobody knows how the vikings spoke back then, but I refuse to believe that it sounded like a shakespearean play.
On the upside, I loved the scenery, the environments and the sheer brutality of it all. Not so often Hollywood have the balls to produce and release something like this in the cinema.

But you know what, that's what I enjoyed about it. Not once was it ever dull or predictable; and when I thought I had it figured out, it went and threw me for a loop.
All in all, I'd call it a positive surprise for a film I really wasn't expecting much from.

agreed I kept expecting the film to turn right and it'd make a left, but not so far out of field that all my expectations were destroyed, and that it felt like he was doing it simply to be unpredictable and ended up taking a ridiculous path.
the fact his uncle was a petty lord not ultimate ruler was nice
the fact it was a psychological fight as much as physical was nice
I loved how the fantasy elements all seemed to fit in their imagination, like the fight in the mound
I loved how his dad was actually bad and his mom planned the death
Hated it. I was kind of on and off again while watching it. Absolutely loved the final duel. After, I got thinking it was pretty interesting. Longer after, I decided I definitely hated it. I thought it was cornball and pretentious, I thought the action scenes were too lethargic, None of it ever felt particularly genuine to me, but neither did it work as an art film complete unto itself. It's by no means a bad movie at all. I think it actually had a lot to say. But not for me, man. This isn't my kind of movie. I didn't like it, but if you do, right on, brother.

shareI think that fit in though..... imagine 1917. it was fantastical, while also being "realistic". the fight scenes were gritty and real. we saw our characters get noticeably tired, weak, and sloppy. he didnt do a backward flip in slow motion that he learned earlier from a kung fu martial artist.
at most he took on a few people at once. weak ass complacent guards whose most recent combat experience was bullying slaves. while he was peak physical condition from rowing and raiding. in the finally battle he dug deep at the very end, and sloppily "won", but not really
