I was expecting more magical/fantasy elements.

I thought Anya was going to be some powerful Witch of the woods showcasing some magic. That perhaps the Valkyrie would have numerous scenes. That Bjork and Dafoe would have larger more prominent roles.

Norse mythology is very fantastical. When you read some of the stories they often make no physical sense and would be impossible to film accurately. The fantasy aspects are in the shadows and only really hinted at. Anya is basically a peasant who puts magic mushrooms in food.

The swords abilities and background was good. That's the sort of stuff I was expecting.

I guess I got my hopes up too much for this film. It's a grounded period-revenge film with hints of magic laced through it.

I don't know man... I understand the Norse mythology incorporates substantial fantasy elements. But I think the director loses the audience if he dedicates too much screen time to cross-dressing 105 year old men speaking in tongues and long haired warriors riding horses into the moon. That stuff is creepy to many people, even if its cool to those familiar with the legends.

Eggers knew things would have to be different this time. He agreed to do larger studio production, and acknowledged that he would have to give up some creative control in order to ensure that the film would appeal to a wider audience. He'll probably go back to his old model the next time around.

Eh Idk I hope Eggers makes more movies like this!

the film perfectly portrayed "magic" in my opinion. of how they would have saw it back then. imagining great evils and creatures, while basically being high as fuck on mushroom, or in some sort of ritualistic crazed state.

ive never seen "magic" portrayed in such a realistic and historically accurate way. most movies hint at "well we presented it as realistic but heres a hint it just may be true after all". this film doesnt do that.
