Woman allergic to water

A woman went to a spa, and when the sprinklers went off, died because she had a rare disease where she was allergic to water. Does anyone know what this disease is called? It boggles my mind. A considerable percentage OF OUR BODIES is water. We bathe (most of us, everyday), brush our teeth...it RAINS. I just...don't understand how this is possible, let alone how someone could go so long without realizing they had it.

I know it's a dirty game, but it's the only one The Man left us to play.

yea the whole situation seemed weird. So she never got caught in the rain? Took a shower? and since she knew about it, why did she go to a spa....when most spas have candles lit???

It's a real condition. I watched a whole special about this woman who had it. She said she could still shower, but she had to make it very quick or else it could be really painful. Her skin would get red and enflamed whenever water got on her skin. Also it's possible the lady in the show didn't know because the woman from the special didn't start experiencing it until later in life after she had a baby. It's called aquagenic urticaria, but I'm not sure if it could kill someone or not, so I don't know how likely a death like the one on 1000 ways to Die is.

My sister has cold induced urticaria so it's not hard for me to believe that this also exists. I do know my sister was rushed to the hospital twice because of it and needs to carry and epi-pen with her. Also, she wasn't officially diagnosed with it until she was a teen when she was having symptoms of it her whole life. The thing was it just really depended on the situation, how cold she got, where she was when she got cold, how long she was cold...stuff like that. I thought it was so bizarre that my sister is effectively allergic to the cold, but after doing research it's not all that uncommon. In fact Josh (In The Blair Witch Project) Has the same problem. It was also mentioned on House MD....although it was classified as "bizarre", but when you personally know three or four other people that have it, it doesn't seem like it's that out of the ordinary. Anyway, allergies like this can surface and then go dormant and then come back and bite you in the ass. I was allergic to penicillin but didn't find out til I was 8 years old, even though I had it numorous times before that for ear infections and strep throat. My doctor said that it may not even give me a reaction any more and I should be retested but until then I have to claim at all hospitals the allergy. Same thing with eggs, I went my whole life eating eggs and not having a problem with them til last year. Same thing with vicodin, I had vicodin a lot for cronic problems but just recently it started making me violently ill. Allergies are tricky, and aren't always prevalent, so if she did go her whole life not knowing it doesn't surprise me.

That being said, this show is only on in my house when there is absolutely nothing else to watch. LoL!

Cracked had an article about the weirdest allergies, this and the sun were in the top three. Water was the #1 I think, and one of the girls in question could only take one minute showers before she'd start to get hives I think.

It's very strange (but interesting) hoe we can be allergic to damn near anything.

I don't get it. How could a person be allergic to water? Our bodies are mostly made up of water, and we need water to survive.

reply

Having water INSIDE ain't the same as being hit with it on the outside.
