The visuals and action scenes are absolutely stunning, and coupled with one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard, I only regret not going to watch this in 3D when it came out. The story was also solid - easy to follow and consistent. And it's probably the only movie that contains a 2-second clip which I can watch over and over again. Yep, that one of Olivia Wilde on the couch. Beautiful.
Not to rub it in, but you did miss out. This is one of the few films in existence that I think was better in 3-D than 2-D. And in the IMAX theater, the scene where the recognizer was landing right in front of Sam caused my seat to shake tangibly.
Definitely one of the most memorable cinema moments I've ever had.

I was fortunate enough to see this 4.5 times in IMAX 3D. The .5 is when I snuck in half way after another movie ended. I watched the last hour without the 3D glasses 😁
I actually prefer the movie in 2D but that scene with recognizer, the effects on the air were incredible. You could really see the attention to detail pay off
Can hardly be overrated when it's panned by the majority.
But point taken about it being released maybe a decade too late. In light of other computer sci-fi movies that have been released since, its plot isn't as powerful as it could have been.
But maybe it wasn't trying to be as unique as the original. Maybe it was just trying to be a simple follow-up with a chance to re-create the Tron world under today's special affects. Because the CGI and affects it achieved -- which were actually a lot better than your average CGI movie -- probably wouldn't have been achieved 10 years ago - as evident by so many on here saying how sensational it was in 3D.

You wanna know what I honestly think? I think they were originally developing a remake of TRON... but the fans of the original were so dead-set AGAINST a remake, & demanding a sequel, that they decided to just write a new script that would be a sequel, but still fit in with the effects and costumes and casting they'd already developed for the remake. --so they didn't have to re-do any of that work.
So instead of 'TRON 2010' with Garrett Hedlund as Flynn and Olivia Wilde as Lora/Yori.. we got a sequel with almost the same storyline as the original, that fits in with the 'new' costumes and the concept art that look so different.
Still, tho.. I don't think it's a BAD story because of that. It just had to fit into certain parameters, and that limited how original the writers could be.

Hmmm, interesting. I didn't really follow any updates/reactions at the time of Tron's announcement, production and release. So I don't know much about the opposition it faced. But even then, as you say, it still managed to produce a respectable sequal.
