What a weak premise...

Never have I seen a show focus the main plot-line around such a contrived situation.
The USB contents could have easily been explained away 'it's not mine ; it's not my son's ; I have an oath to keep ; call the cops if you want, and I will explain to them - but not to you". You know - like a normal person.
I'm sure once she handed it off to the police, the tutor wouldn't have gone around and said that Ben was a Pedo. She would let the Police handle it.
But the plot instead goes the way of 'I must KILL her to silence her'
Other than that I enjoyed it - especially the Prison characters.

The moment something like that gets presented to the cops, the media will get hold of it and the kid, the vicar and his wife will all be ruined even if it is proven not to be the son. And the intention wasn't to kill her originally just get her not to leave so he can explain... it just went downhill from there.

Agreed! I often have this problem with British television shows.Maybe that is a nuance of British shows where scenarios have to be completely impractical. There are some decent parts in the show though. Only halfway through at the moment.

Ya maybe it's a Brit thing.
I watched another mini-series called 'Anatomy of a Scandal' and it was great.
But halfway thru they revelated the one of the Women was best friends with the other main woman 20 years ago at University, but she didn't recognize her. It was a totally diff actor - diff voice ; 4 inches taller ; 20 lbs lighter I again felt - what a betrayal to the viewer ; a very weak premise.
Maybe a Brit thing like you said.

This. 100%.

Which of course, not happening, leads not only to the entirely ridiculous cellar thing, but also the other ostensibly sane adult (wife) just accepting the new status quo in their lives. yeah right...

I thought it was silly , I didnt know if it was going to be a "comedy drama" at that point .

But at least it was a series of successive blunders building up to the end result of "locked in cellar" , rather than just one thing .

Like Bounce pointed out though , once the wife got home and saw only the end result its a bit of a stretch to think she'd get on board with it , rather than say " come clean and quit while your behind . before it gets even worse"

Also the Uk media by law cannot name anyone under investigation that hasn't been found guilty.
