shareBesides the coming of age factor, not really. How so?
shareNow that you say that I kind of can see a similarity between this and "Catcher."
Both Holden and James are down on their luck in life, both are frustrated at the world and they both want to move away from home but can't afford to.
Also both this and "Catcher" seem to show that even though both characters are having a crappy time in their lives, they still find some good things in their situations and still learn from their experiences (mostly becoming bitter and cynical at the end).
Plus I would say that James is more idealistic and possibly a bit more naïve than Holden.
I can see it in a way. James was from an upper middle class background but could blend in with the lower class like Holden Caufield, And he had a vulnerability about him like Holden and was intelligent, but could go back and forth on the confidence level like our boy Holden. I don't think he was as depressed as HC though, seemed to look more on the bright side. By the way, I love both Adventureland and The Catcher in the Rye. I love stuff about offbeat people.
