Had to turn the subtitles on

Because so often they just didn't speak clearly. Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart were the worst culprits of course but even some of the other characters did this, like Lisa P.

Eisenberg just talks so fast, a bit like Martin Scorsese, and he and Stewart gabbled out lines without even bothering to fully pronounce half the words, eg. one bit where, according to the subtitles, she says "I'm gonna punch out" sounded like "I'm-g'nna-p'chot".

I know they were probably trying to talk like normal teens/young adults but it was ridiculous. Or is it just me?

Really late but YES totally agree. I had to rewind like five times and eventually just put the subtitles on. No, it's not just you. Just so much mumbling! :)

worth hearing so I didn't bother with subtitles.

Good movie, but they did very little with that character. You had to want him to go to NYC to find her just so he'd get out of western PA, but not because she was any kind of catch.

I'm considering doing so as well (I'm about half hour in). Eisenberg just mutters. Stewart isn't hard to understand. She just says her lines. There's no acting. It's a recital.

I'll turn them on if it seems like anything being said matters at all. So far nothing has happened in this movie.

Is it a comedy? It's hard to tell because there are things that seem like they're intended to be funny, but so far nothing actually is. I'm pretty sure it's drama actually - I'm just not 100% on that.

Way late, I know, but I just rewatched the film today and I wanted to comment. I didn't have an issue understanding either of the two or anyone else in the film for that matter. I think maybe you just need to turn the volume up louder on your TV. I often find that when I'm not understanding dialogue it is because the volume is too low.

reply

I found it hard to hear the dialogue because of the music and noise in the background in the park and in the bars and during the parties, basically most of the movie. I didn't notice any slurring particularly though.
