I was born in 1969. In 1987, it was still The Replacements, REM, and Husker Du. A few kids listened to the Beastie Boys and Run DMC. Not many. However, only two years later, 1989, everybody was listening to Public Enemy and BDP.
Rap took off in 1988/1989.
IMO, PE, BDP, and NWA changed everything.
Metallica was really big 1987-1990.
1987 was REM. 1989 was Public Enemy. Big shift. PE changed everything. IMO, it's all about Chuck D and Spike Lee. Chuck D's lyrics and Spike Lee's movies got white kids into rap (black music).
