WHY IS THIS MOVIE SET IN THE 80'S?

Setting Adventureland in the 80's served no purpose to plot, character, tone or mood so what was the point?

It took me 20 minutes before I even realized that this WAS set in the 80's (in the brief moment when Regan was on TV).

reply

I think because it was based off events from the Director's own life.

The intro shows 1985 , so dont know why it took 20 minutes to figure it out. And what the othe guy said may be the reason. Kinda like Almost Famous

reply

Well the intro must have passed by pretty fast because I sure didn't notice it. But I guess it didn't help that I was working out while watching this film so my mind wasn't on it 100 percent. I saw signs that this movie wasn't set in today's world but it wasn't one of those films that blatantly made you aware it was set in the 80s. With the exception of tube socks I can honestly see this film taking place today where I live sadly.

Yeah it took me awhile as well to understand that this was set in the 80s. And like you I don't understand what the time frame had to do with anything.

Yeah, I don't think I would have immediately noticed that it was set in the 80s if I didn't see a summary of the movie beforehand. No big deal, though.

OMG THANK GOD! I had thought I was the only one! Until I came here on iMdb I hadn't realised it was set in the 80s either. I had thought it was just a present day, generic indie setting

An amusement park as crappy as Adventureland is simply more plausible for the 1980ies. Plus it's based on the director's biography. Plus, setting a plot in the past adds a warm glow to the events.

Plus, great, kick-ass music that no other decade can hold a candle to!
