Other movies with a similarly grungy/chill feeling?

I loved the atmosphere in this movie. Something about the losers and stoners who worked at the carnival and the way they lived their lives was really awesome to me, haha. Any ideas? I really liked The Way Way Back too.

If you haven't seen it yet, I feel like you would enjoy Clerks. It's an indie film from the 90's about a day in the life of two guys working at a convenient store in New Jersey. It's hilarious, and it has a HUGE grungy/chill feeling to it.

I think the vibe of TMHT is a lot different. It's a lot more 80s and lot less late 90s grungy. I prefer the TMHT kinda vibe myself, but not sure the OP would.

That atmosphere was just really the way it was in the late 70's and 80's. That's why I like it, reminds me of my teens. It was a great time to be young. So so different than now.... I grew up in Seattle and so I guess it kind of carried into the 90's except we got too over exposed then so for us anyway, it was more grungy like earlier... Plus, this movie was actually filmed in the winter, they had to clear snow shooting it per Trivia. That look and darker feeling is very Seattle most of the year. I prefer it. Clerks kind of has that feeling but I think it's more of just the fact it was in Black and White.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man....

It was way different for me, but I guess the fact that you grew up in Seattle explains it. I think Seattle went from the 70s to the grungy, dingy era without getting too much of a real taste of the 80s maybe? Personally I was pretty dummed when the whole Seattle culture ended up spreading across the country and bringing such downer music and greasy, flat, dull styles and kinda ending the upbeat, fun, colorful 80s vibe that had so dominated for so many years where I was (big hair probably didn't fade out where I was until maybe 1995 even).

In the Northeast and California(and most other parts of the country I went to in the 80s) the vibe was nothing like the vibe in this movie at all. Almost 180 degrees away, really (other than maybe some of the Lisa P bits and the club she went to, but the movie almost made fun of that club and made it seem like that was outsider).

This felt like a mix of the vibe of late 70s to maybe very earliest 80s combined with mid to late 90s combined with late 2000s to me and not one bit like say 1983-1992.

Check out 90s type films. This film basically captures that grungy and hipstery feel far better than it did the fun, light 80s spirit (other than for some bits with Lisa P). Personally I hated when the dreary grunge era pushed aside the fun, happy 80s spirit (along with hardcore hip-hop; the only trace left was boy bands and they were probably a worse devil overall hah).

Granted the 80s also had the head-banger burnout culture too, but even that wasn't really at all like grunge much less hipster culture.

Some 70s focused youth culture films might have a bit of this vibe too.
