It kind of resembles the Ward Weaver murders in Oregon in 2002. One girl went on TV after her friend disappeared and then she disappeared and there were barrels involved. . .
However, it had nothing to do with the internet, S and M videos, or anybody being buried alive. If this story were "real", I think we all would have heard about it a long time before this movie.
It's more like based on real scenarios. If it were based on a real event they'd probably have to pay a family so they kept it vague.

It was based on a compilation of several kidnap/torture/murder cases right down to one where a young girl had been buried alive clutching her purple stuffed whale the kidnapper grabbed when he took her.
