Why does Peter even need to go to college?
Isn’t he a science genius? He could just start his own business.

shareMost, if not all, science jobs require a college degree.
shareMany people who do not have college degrees have founded successful businesses, including those based on technology. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs being two well-known examples.
shareYou're right, but a scientist in their field is typically taken seriously if they have a college degree. Also, Peter's college years is crucial in his life and career as Spider-Man. In the original comics, he met some of his friends like Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn and faced some new enemies when he was a college student.
shareOh, I agree the degree will help his credibility and his college years are important to his adult life. I was only addressing the issue that you HAVE to have a degree to succeed in a field. It helps open doors, but your ability is going to be more important in the long run.
shareOkay. I didn't mean to imply that you can only exceed in life with a college degree. I meant to give a general statement that a college degree is expected for science jobs.
shareSomething something Parker Luck. Peter's a loser, always will be. It's the unspoken curse of his being the greatest superhero ever.
shareWith his reflexes and strength, he could just play pro baseball and make a fortune.
But he needs college as a backup plan, in case he loses his spider powers again.
Starting a business takes cash too, something he doesn't have much of. Maybe Pepper would invest in him though.
You're overthinking it. Maybe, like many (most?) people, a life as a pro athlete would be unfulfilling, and he has dreams and plans he wants to live out. He's wanted to be a scientist since childhood, and one goes to college, and then grad school, to accomplish that.
shareBut there's also upside to being a pro athlete, even if it's not your dream career: you work for 10 years or less, and make a lot of money which could be used to start your own company. And you work half the year, so you can still go to college.
But it would be kind of unfair for Spiderman to play pro baseball, like Clark Kent playing high school football....
I'd have become a pro fighter in his shoes. I've wondered since the 60s why he didn't clobber Jameson?
shareHe probably want's the college experience with his friends. Can't fault him for that.
But from a practical standpoint, he could easily just get a job a Stark Industries. This would allow him to work on his own schedule and incorporate his avenging without having to live that classic shitty life that Spiderman normally has.
They tried that in the comics, Parker Industries. Apparently that made him less relatable for some fans since he was successful and happy, so if I recall correctly they did away with that, I haven’t read marvel comics in a while. It’s one thing if they just criticized the writing, but people didn’t even like the idea of Parker finally making it big after all those years of struggling and hard work.
Hot take, but some fans really need to grow up and stop projecting their own failures onto Peter. Let the guy grow, he’s been stagnant for too long. I wish Spider-Girl was part of the main canon too, if he can’t be rich from his genius then let him be happy with a family, though that’s more of the writers’ fault, they seem to like seeing him miserable too.
