Was it actually necessary to put the villains in holding cells or even search for them? (SPOILER: post-credits scene)

We see that Eddie Brock gets returned despite never having been located or imprisoned. Is that because the spell was different in the end? Or is the bit of goo left behind a sign that it would in fact have been better to locate him? But then again, none of the baddies were in cells at the end.

Not to sound salty but the entire thing was pointless. I can only guess that capturing them mitigated the potential damage done to the city.

Or is the bit of goo left behind a sign that it would in fact have been better to locate him? But then again, none of the baddies were in cells at the end.

Who's to say that he could've left behind goo in a containment cell. I don't think there was gonna be a foolproof plan for Venom.

reply

They explicitly stated that the spell actually used at the end was different. For one thing, it had no exceptions.

reply

Right, but the machine with the button was different from either of them, was it not?

But let's say you're right. What would have happened if Peter didn't prevent Strange from pushing the button?

reply

Not sure. It is vague. ONe could invent excuses.

reply

Fair enough!

reply

They were put in holding cells so they wouldn't run amok and do bad things. Dr. Strange didn't know how many visitors were coming, or who they were, so they had to be rounded up one by one before being sent back.

reply

But if pushing the button would instantly send them back regardless of where they were, why would that matter? He doesn't need to wait, so there's no need to put them on ice--just push the button! No need to ask the teens to "Scooby-Doo this s---".

They could have dealt with it by saying Strange needed to go travel to various realms for the components he needed, or that it needed time to "cook". But that did not appear to be the case.

reply

Pushing the button would only send those in the cells back. The spell in the end was different than the box. Instead of undoing the spell and launching them backwards he just used another spell that over-rode it.

reply

That's contradicted by the fact that when Peter let them out of the cells, he warned that any misbehavior would lead to him immediately pushing the button.

reply

Peter was an idiot child who had no idea what he was doing and his entire plan consisted of lying to the guys hes got a plan and then asking his friends for help. What makes any of his warnings valid?

reply

Venom felt pointless. You didn't even get to see him meet Spider-Man.

reply

Would you really have wanted that sandwiched into this film? Wasn't that a major flaw with Spider-Man 3?

Spider-Man vs. Venom should be its own film, if not its own trilogy.

reply

More that I like Tom Hardy as Venom and frankly knowing Sony they'll go the Ultimate Route with Eddie Brock which I don't like.

reply

I'd prefer a Venom that is closer to the comic books than the Hardy version. Venom as the goofy nerd doing comedic pantomime doesn't work for me.

reply

Ultimate Eddie Brock is nerdy.
