Example of bad writing in post-2000 movies #237
this is another movie you can point to as an objective example of bafflingly shitty scriptwriting in a big-budget Hollywood film that had the potential to make millions.
Bill and Ted are portrayed as idiots who have barely grown up. They have no character arc.
Their sons are now daughters, who are unattractive and one-dimensional and are now responsible for saving the world for them. Woke box checked. If you can't see this pattern or want to debate this, just... don't. You're stupid. Seriously, you are. Let it go.
None of the supporting characters are there for any reason other than to be there. They're just thrown in like so many marshmallow things in a bowl of Lucky Charms.
Okay so how much could it possibly cost to hire a scriptwriter who isn't missing any chromosomes?
It's not even about political agendas or the fact they chose to make this in the first place. It's about how good scripts make more money. Good scripts are things people can identify with.
Take Bill and Ted to begin with. They are not young men any more. They are middle-aged men with responsibilities. That doesn't mean they are boring, just that they are at a different stage in their lives, and the fun of this movie would have to proceed from that. Maybe they feel in a rut and experience something that reminds them of the sense of hope and purpose that they'd since forgotten. We could go on that journey with them, no matter what age we are. I'd watch that movie. You could and should have some nostalgia in there, but the nostalgia should be secondary to relatable characters facing challenges and changing for the better in some way.
Nope. Instead it was a really stupid rehash that just threw elements of the first two up in the air and watched them land at random.
I guess Hollywood has enough money now.
