Occupied India?

Twice I noticed title cards saying that flashbacks to the 1940s were to "British Occupied India" or something similar.

And that is about as accurate as titles cards describing Goa or Sikkim in 2023 as "Indian occupied Goa" or "Indian occupied Sikkim".

Or like British people mentioning the Roman occupation of Britain.

The Romans didn't occupy Britain, they invaded, conquered, and annexed the larger part of the island of Great Britain and ruled it for over 350 years.

India doesn't occupy Goa or Sikkim, it annexed them.

And the British didn't occupy India, they conquered, annexed, and ruled it.

An occupation happens when country A and Country B are at war. If troops from country A advance into country B and seize control of a lot of territory, the territory they control is under occupation. This occupation lasts until the troops of country A are driven out or the war ends. When a war ends the occupation of territory ends, as the occupied territory is either returned to the country it belonged to or annexed by the occupying country according to the terms of the peace treaty.

And the wars had been over for a century or so in most parts of British India. And thus India was not occupied by the British but ruled by the British.
