A matrix within the matrix? (Spoilers)

So Neo was in the matrix as Thomas Anderson, a game developer, being controlled by the analyst, but secretly within the matrix he created a smaller instance of a matrix called a modal, and he kept it running 24/7 to try and recreate Morpheus and hope that he'd escape to help him? And within that modal he forced recreations of Trinity and others to battle and suffer in perpetuity?

How the hell did Neo create a second matrix? I thought it was insanely complicated tech that was the culmination of dozens of years of research leading to machine AI which led to the machines inventing the matrix. Why would that exist in the matrix itself, which is modeled after normal 20th/21st century earth? Or did the Analyst create that modal, and Neo just had access to it for some reason?

It's not quite a full Matrix, it's just a module for a MMORPG game ...

The better question: is, in the previous movies, "reality" just another level of Matrix? Remember how neo got powers in the real world?

I was actually suspecting the big twist would be that the Machine City, the Power Plant, Zion, Io, and the 6th & 7th version of the Matrix all existed within yet another version of the Matrix, the real world was still another layer away that had not been pulled back in the original trilogy.

I thought they were doing that too. But to be fair, I never liked that perspective on the original trilogy so I'm glad they didn't lol

Agreed, that would have been too much of "it was all just a dream" lazy writing cop out, haha.

I thought of it as Matrix 2.0 where Neo and Trinity have been resurrected and manipulated in to new roles just because they, quite literally, generate huge amounts of power if the tension can be maintained at just the right pitch. Meanwhile Matrix 1.0 persists as a game that, ironically?, inspires a new generation of rebels.
