Regarding REC and Quarantine

Not here to get in anybodies "Kool Aid" but so please do not misconstrue or take what I write personally. I promise, my intentions are good.

I know most people think REC was just absolutely amazing and Quarantine sucks. My question is "Why?". First off, Quarantine is a SHOT BY SHOT remake of Rec. Personally, I enjoyed Quarantine far more...and I saw REC first.

Do not get me wrong. REC was a pretty decent movie. But, people seem to be treating it like the Holy Grail. It really isn't nothing to write home about. For that matter, neither is Quarantine. But, I think effect wise, was much better. The blood in REC seriously looked like Tomato soup.

Personally, neither were Oscar worthy. There are hardly any horror movies that are. But, both were decent films of their genre. They are extremely identical other then effects and some dialogue. So, do not be so hard on either. Some people on here do not seem to realize that the writing team from REC were credited on Quarantine as well. So, if you did not like Quarantine, maybe you didn't like REC either and are only saying something because you feel that these people stole the idea and did not give credit where credit is due. Not the case.

If you hate Quarantine so much, just remember:

1. It is a shot by shot remake.
2. The movie had to get a green light from the makers of REC to even make it in the first place.
3. The WRITERS from REC are credited in Quarantine.
4. It is only a movie.

1. And? Funny Games is a shot by shot, by the original is much better. It's different actors, different settings, different cameras, etc... so the feel of the film is different.
2. I saw an interview with the makers of [Rec] where the first they heard about a remake was online. So no they didn't green light it.
3. Fair enough but why does creditting the original mean Quarantine's a better film (I mean better than if it had not creditted, not better as in better than [Rec])?
4. Agreed but it's also our opinions on the two films and we think [Rec] is better.

And better effects make not a better film. In my opinion lots of CGI like in American remakes make the film worse. If they didn't go OTT with effects in remakes they wouldn't be so bad (they still wouldn't be as good as the original). The originals are more psychological than effect laden which is why they are more effective.

And we all hate the remakes because it's more proof that Hollywood is losing it's creativity and originality. Hollywood used to be great. Then they started remaking every film and in the process lost creativity/originality. The remakes always make money because a lot of people are put off by subtitles (I'm not going to call them lazy it's just a preference, I used to be like that until I watched Amelie). And because they make money more remakes will be done. And it's just a vicious circle. Instead of spending money on films that are original they're wastinmg it on remaking foreign films, and even their own films.

And if you say the remake wasn't as scary because I saw the original first and knew what to expect you're wrong. Most films I've seen that have been remade I saw the remake before the original (though with Rec/Quarantine I saw the original first this point's still valid). For example Ring.. The remake was not scary one bit and I saw that when it first came out when films scared me more. I saw the original for the first time this year and it's way more scary. The scene where she comes out of the TV is one of the scariest scenes ever in the Japanese. In the American remake it was awful. And this is similar with a lot of others like Black Christmas, The Grudge, One Missed Call, etc...

IMO they're both great, but "Rec" is still the original and maybe that's why most people prefer it over the remake.
I have 2 add to points; it wasn't really a shot-by-shot remake; there were some different incidents or maybe I don't remember much of Rec's events because it's been a long time. 2nd point is that there's one thing I like about "Quarantine" more than in "Rec"; a virus epidemic is a much better idea than a demonic possession!
