The only real problem I have with this movie compared to REC. (spoilers)

The disease itself and the ending of the movie. In REC, moreso in REC 2, the disease is revealed to be demonic possession but in Quarantine it's just an accelerated strain of rabies. The girl at the end of REC is revealed to be the Medeiros girl who is supposedly the source of the possession, but then in Quarantine, there's absolutely no explanation of who that person is in the penthouse at the end of the movie. There's rats in cages and newspapers talking about some sort of nuclear weapon and we're just left to assume that the rabies is a biological weapon they were developing there and someone in the penthouse was experimenting on the rats. And that's not even explicitly explained in the movie, it's just what we're supposed to assume, if I'm right.

Long story short, since they chose not to go down the possession route in Quarantine, the ending doesn't really make much sense to me. And I'm thinking the ending still wouldn't make sense to me even if I hadn't already seen REC before watching Quarantine.

Overall, I think both movies are fine in their own rights, but I will always prefer REC and REC 2 over Quarantine. I'm definitely looking forward to the next two REC movies that are planned.

Don't like me? F_ck off. Problem solved.

REC is possibly the best horror film I have ever seen, quarantine is a perfect example of a film that was made with NO imagination or creativity of any kind and whose only goal is to exploit other people's hard work to make money for hollywood suits.

dont get me wrong i liked Rec but i just would rather have zombies or zombie like creatures over demonic possession, i just feel like it turns stupid when it gets religious with demons and such. Like if Dawn of the dead or 28 days later turned out to be because demons took over the world it would just turn me off the movie IMO

But is rabies a better alternative to zombies OR demons? I honestly don't think so. I would much rather have them go the demonic route like they did than have it just be a superimposed form of rabies.

In Quarantine 2, they explain that the guy that owned the lab in the apartment complex was testing his own serum on rats and his plan was to use this rabies virus to whittle down the human population because we're so overpopulated. As much as I like that they actually explained it, I still don't buy it. As a horror film series, I personally prefer the supernatural aspects over the more "realistic" ones which makes me love REC 1 and 2 (and makes me super excited for 3 and 4) but that is just me.

I have not seen REC. I only just found out it exists today. I promise I will go find it in the next little bit.

But I have to agree. I like zombie movies more when it's more science based. I don't believe in all that supernatural or religious stuff. If you're going to go with demonic possession, why have an explanation at all?

I will wait until I see it before I say for sure, but my initial opinion is rabies would be scarier than demonic possession.

If someone were to mutate rabies, which could actually happen, I would be much more frightened. Viruses are way more scary than imaginary religious propoganda.

Normally I would agree that scientifically explained infection is more interesting than supernatural demonic possession. But in this case, the demonic stuff of REC somehow worked better than the scientific stuff of Quarantine. Anyway, the demonic in REC was not completely supernatural; they had tried to give it some scientific basis.

I totally agree with the OP. I think seeing [Rec] first and knowing it was demonic possession plus I believe that you shouldnt mess with that stuff is worse then rabies personally.

It depends on the film. 28 Days Later would have been rubbish if the 'zombies' were just possessed; the rabies made it more realistic.

But REC and Quarantines take place mostly in dark claustrophobic surroundings, so the supernatural is far scarier than someone who's just got blood poisoning.
