Can someone give a plausible explanation as to why the elevator was operational?

The building had been cut off, the power swithed off, was the lift working off of some auxiliary power source?
Was this explained in the film or did I just miss it?

towards the end, when they are going to the Super's apartment, the fireman explains that the elevators run on auxiliary power even when the main power is cut off
