Disappointment
I can sadly say I was very disappointed watching this. (SPOILERS)
The movie dragged on for a long time, with little to no point. You started the movie hearing the title over and over, fine. Look, that little boy has a bag on his head, why is that scary? maybe I should put a bag on my head and jump out at people. Bag on head is not scary. Maybe if it had eye holes? I guess? Or a rip for a mouth? Then I could pretend it was scary?
We meet a doctor. Jason Clarke is trying very hard to make this movie good. He is high on Laudanum poison 90 percent of the begining of the movie. I wish i was. He does magic tricks also to prove he is bad at his job? Really wish they went into more detail about the house. Its a big ass house, so many rooms. We get to see three, four at most.
We are lead to believe initially that he's seeing this very brief flashes because he's high on laudanum, or at least thats what they want you to think. They arent even scary jump scares, which makes it worse. That mirror is moving towards that chair an awful lot-oops scary Booo? And at one point there's a maid dusting?
At some point just to invent plot for myself I think perhaps HES THE GHOST! But the non-creepy by writing characters can see and talk to him so that doesn't really pass the grade. The movie continues to drag on. Look, this old lady is crazy, haha crazy lookit the big house she built with the 13 nails on doors? Apparently NOT a sinister trick but a heavenly one but they never explain WHY so you are just left wondering if she sent all the ghosts to their rooms for time out.
Jason Clarke is trying really hard to make this movie good.
At an hour run time we are still left grasping for some form of amusement. Also, the doctor goes to explore a house he's a guest in and plays hide and seek with the music. When something finally starts to happen its..its so upsetting how bad it is. One, ONE ghost, is angry at this woman, so very angry that he breaks from his grounded room and goes on a tiny rampage? Has a few nice chats with the doctor to prove he's scary, also, because we needed that?(I personally found the actor unnerving all on his own he didn't have to go BOO) We see brief glimpses of other ghosts that would have made a better story before Butler ghost is shot with a ghost..bullet? The end? ?!?!?
What makes that ONE ghost, Block something, angrier than the others? Apparently they are all upset with her because her guns caused their deaths, but only he's uber upset enough to do something about it? Because his brothers died..? She had a few hundred names on that shelf of hers, why couldn't we see all of them unite to be THE BIG ANGRY GHOST machine instead of one tiny guy with a bag on his head?
Ugh I wanted something sinister and spooky and awesome and look at all these corridors that go no where and upside down doors and this house is totally haunted.
But all I got was Jason Clarke trying really really hard to make this movie good and one guy with a bag on his head who's killed by the power of love/ghost bullet.
