It could have been her boyfriend's roommate who died but the blame was placed on her for being a foreigner. It could have been her roommate's parents that mysteriously died while in her apartment, etc., etc., etc.
It's easy to avoid lawsuits with any number of story altercations, hetero-conversion would have been the very last thing on the list for any honest screenwriter.
