in this movie was ridiculous! I normally don't have a problem with it, as long as it's subtle, but I feel like the movie was just one big commercial. How many times did he say Red bull? Blockbuster, Rolling Rock, the list goes on....I'm forgetting a few more key examples, but I remember watching it and saying, "This is just too much product placement!" I know Jim Carrey demands 20 mil a movie, but don't sacrifice the integrity of the film just to get the biggest name. Maybe Ben Stiller would have been a better choice for Carl?
I'm a 4th year marketing major in university and I usually notice all of the unnecessary product placement in films. In Yes Man however, it fit well with the plot. Rolling Rock was the only exception, as he could have simply ordered a "beer" and not a specific brand. While referring to Red Bull, the Ducatti, etc., these products helped build the story and climax of the film and were not as blatant. I found Jim Carrey's constant mention of Red Bull more annoying than the product placement itself.
Trust me, there are other films, TV shows, music videos etc that have much more shameless product placement than this entertaining piece of cinema.
Don't let product placement affect you too much, because it will make you go insane. It's only going to increase in the future as the use of internet increases amongst consumers.
Just watched the movie and I don`t think it was that bad as some people make it out to be. If I were to nitpick, I would say it was unnecessary to say he had a dell screen and a cisco phone. The rest fitted nicely into the plot. -------------------------------
God forbig a film set the scene in the present day by using actual present day items *shock*
[/sarcasm]
Never understood the product placement hate when its every day items from the day its actually set in, doesn't bother me at all. It's the world we live in.
Ben Stiller? Come on! He's a douche and workable only for a certain kind of roles and even there he tends to tire you out. I don't have that much of a problem with pdt placement and I didn't think it wasn't subtly done. I watched it on HBO India yesterday and the only reason I'd think of changing Jim Carrey would be his age.
I'd rather they use real brands it makes the dialogue much more realistic. The 'Red Bull' scene would have been lame if he had just kept repeating the phrase "Energy drink"
YEAH AND SO MUCH CARS IN THAT MOVIE ! CAN T THEY DO A MOVIE WITHOUT CARS, OR ROADS, THOSE PRODUCTS ARE WAY MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THAT RED BULL. LET'S GET BACK TO THOSE MOVIE SHOOTED IN A GARAGE WITH NAKED PEOPLE
The product placement that I found annoying was when Carrey's riding past the UPS van and the driver asks him, "How you doing?" I understand that there are going to be products displayed in a movie, it's pretty hard not to, but it felt like the only reason that scene was in there was to give UPS a plug (of sorts).
You'll want to avoid watching The Island, its product placement is far worse. It even has one of the characters watch her own ad in the movie.
Complaining about product placement is so retarded on so many levels. I actually prefer to see brands and products that actually exist instead of silly made up ones. As someone mentioned earlier, only significant placement I remember was Redbull but that was because of a joke that centered around that product. People know that Redbull makes you buzz which made the scene so funny, calling it something else would completely ruin the impact of the joke.
