Who shold have played Carl instead of Carrey?

Age differences can be overlooked as long as they are within reason. At least try to stick by the rule of thumb -half your age plus 7. Applying that rule, the youngest woman that should have been starring opposite Carrey would be in her early 30s.

Now, who would have been a better male lead than Carrey to star opposite Zooey? After some thought, I would say Justin Bartha. He is a rising star - was funny in the National Treasure series and the Hangover and is a believable love interest for Deschanel.

probably, but that wouldn't have happened because, jim is on the poster, not zooey. this IS jim's movie after all.

reply

You are completely right, but they should choose somebody older than the girl definitely, Jim is very handsome and looks great for his age, but she looks like a child...

I'm sure you're right Dylan, but I'm sure I wouldn't have seen this if my son hadn't rented it, and handed it to me. I get an allergic reaction from Jim Carey.
I really have to avoid movies with him in it. I think there must be some sort of line that he crosses that make me very uncomfortable. All of the face distortions make me wonder if perhaps he has to consciously try to make a normal face. I have alway felt equally uncomfortable with Jerry Lewis. There is something similar in the way they don't care how cartoonlike they become. Didn't their mother tell them not to make faces or they will stay that way?

reply

I think you're harping a little too much into this distorted face thing. Does it really bother you that much?

reply

Well, I don't think Jim Carrey needed to be replaced, he was perfect. =)
Your comment about Justin Bartha is funny because he did in fact play the love interest for Zooey in Failure to Launch. Did you randomly think of that or did you see them in that movie? If it was random then good job lol

reply

how about Danny Wallace himself??

NOT Ryan Reynolds. I saw him rip off Jim Carrey in the movie "Just Friends" and it was not funny. Actually the entire movie was not funny.

reply

Jim was the right choice. if he had declined the role then I think it should have been Bradley Cooper, Dane Cook, or Ryan Reynolds

reply

Not sure if I would replace Jim Carrey. He was good in that role. He does goofy well. I also loved Zooey (I am a big fan of hers anyway); she does offbeat characters well. That said, I was thinking the exact same thing! They were not a good match as far as relationships go. The first thing I said when I saw the budding romance was, "he's old enough to be her father!" In that sense, it was disgusting.

For some reason I would of liked to see John Cusack. He could of pulled this off, although some of the more typical Jim Carrey 'crazy' moments would of probably had to be rewrote.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that was bothered by the pairing of Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel. That was just a stupid decision by casting. Then again, Carrey is famous for getting people cast that he is personally interested in (Holly, Zellweger). As creepy as that sounds. She simply looked liked some cute little 20ish something and he an older guy in his late 40's. I'm not naive, I know looks and name recognition play as large a role in the film industry as acting ability (if not more so) but even if they needed a capable singer that fit the characters wacky persona, there are plenty of capable 35+ year olds out there that would have been far better suited to Carreys character's age.

It makes you feel bad for aging actresses trying to land a job. There's always someone younger and prettier around the corner. Not that I blame Deschanel for taking the part.

Still, it was a Jim Carrey vehicle. As to whom would have been more appropriate than Deschanel? Over two years have past. It's tough to say as it was a smaller role. However, many 30 somethings would have been capable of doing it.

Carrey and Zooey didn't have much chemistry together, and Jim looked far too old for her. Physically he made a better pair with that elderly neighbor who seduced him.
