Do you prefer this or Liar Liar?

It's interesting that many critics dismissed this film as being to similar to Liar Liar, yet it has a higher IMDB rating (7.0 vs 6.7). Personally I find them both hilarious but I would give Yes Man the edge as I think it's more over the top. James Bernadelli was an exception among the critics giving this 3/4 and Liar Liar 2.5/4.

This. Easily. It's got Zoe in it. It doesn't have that ponce Cary Elwes in it. And it's better than Liar Liar because Jim Carrey isn't over the top in it.

Atleast "Liar Liar" was an original concept at the time. Hollywood is always whining because they want fresh, new and ORIGINAL material and then they go and produce this film which is just a blatant rip-off of the "Liar, Liar" concept. And they even got the same guy to play the lead! Meryl Streep was right - Hollywood thinks we're all idiots.

I did like Liar Liar but I prefer Yes Man definitely. There is something about Yes Man that is really nice. I think it is a film that many people can relate to in that people do get stuck in a rut and don't go out of their comfort zone and it makes you think just how much you could achieve and change in a year if you were to make things happen and say yes to everything.

I like the characters in Yes Man. I think Jim Carey is a brilliantly talented actor. I really like Bradley Cooper and Zoeey Deschanel is just lovely and cool. I love some of the scenes in this movie, I thought the scene where they are walking down some road in the middle of nowhere in Nebraska and it starts raining is fantastic.

Super film, can't wait to watch it again.

You do know this movie was based on the book "Yes, Man" by Danny Wallace. In the book, some random stranger told Danny that he should say yes more and he decided to try it. He tried it for a day, then the rest of the week, then finally the rest of the year. He did have some parameters to keep things from getting too far out of control. But other than that the movie was practically taking the same concept, and a lot of the events that happen in the book and just rearranging them.
If this is a blatant rip-off of "Liar, Liar" blame Danny Wallace for actually doing the "Yes, Man" experiment.

Also, in "Liar, Liar", his son wished for him not to lie, and Carrey's character just couldn't and lost the ability to lie. Where as in "Yes, Man" he can say no, but since he made a promise to himself, saying no would have some consequences. The thing is also here, a lot of that stuff was in his mind.

In the end "Liar, Liar" was original, and "Yes, Man" was bad on a real experiment by a real man. Who also had a cameo in the movie too.

But that is where you are wrong, dude. Cary Elwes is in the "Saw" scene, where Carl yells, "Come on! Snap it off already!" Maybe he was in some way still pissed off at Elwes for trying to steal his ex-wife in "Liar! Liar!"

Wow, that's a really interesting interpretation. I had no idea he was in the scene, but your reasoning makes total sense...especially if it was an ad-lib by Jim.

Damn good observation!

As for the original subject:

In Liar Liar (1997), he can't lie, so he basically admits (says yes) to certain questions.

In Yes Man (2008), he says yes to everything, even though he has the option of saying "no", refuses to do so throughout most of the movie.

IMO, there's hardly a difference between the two.

But, putting that aside, this movie just didn't have the chemistry like it did with Liar Liar. Carrey and Deschanel's characters were an odd pairing, especially with the age gap. Then, you have the rest of the ensemble which, for me, didn't click.

I would take Liar Liar any day of the week. Plus, Jim Carrey just seemed more vivacious in that film than in Yes Man.

I'm surprised I'm in the minority here. I actually liked Liar Liar better. As a story and concept, I love Yes Man, but the casting and chemistry between the actors nearly ruined it for me. Zooey and Jim Carrey didn't seem natural, and Carrey and his friends seemed a little weird too. I never like anything Bradley Cooper is in, so that probably has something to do with it too.

Liar Liar was pretty stupid, but well done in that way. Until they redo the movie, I prefer Liar.

I'm going along with jeff. It's been awhile since I saw Liar Liar, but I do remember really finding it funny, with plenty of lol moments.

Yes Man was mildly amusing in parts (as most carrey films are), but everything seemed to stretch the boundaries of credibility so much...in a film supposedly derived from non - fictional sources. The obvious thing as many other posters have noted is the age differences between Jim and his co - stars...and the granny neighbour on top of that. The story just didn't flow together for me; it just seemed to be a whole lot of somewhat juvenile set ups for Jim to try to appear funny and jump from one sketch to another. Interesting to see Bradley Cooper though just before he went ballistic and I did like Terence Stamp in his cameo...now he was funny!

I'm a huge Jim Carey fan but this film was not up to par. Liar Liar was way better. And I don't see Yes Man as similar to it either - two entirely different movies IMO.

I loved Liar, Liar back in the 1990s, but now it kind of bores me. Yes Man is still entertaining...

I can't stand the kind of humor of "Liar, Liar". "Yes Man" is waaaaay better. And it has the best band that never existed!!!!

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language.

Well, court scenes alone in Liar were funnier than this entire movie. I think Jim has lost a bit of his funniness with the years.

I own you.

I've seen both countless times, but I tend to enjoy Yes Man a little more.

I prefer this one even though I personally don't like Zooey Deschanel. She's actually not as bad in this as I usually think she is (not in the sense of a bad actor, she's not that; I just don't like the characters she plays usually). Anyway, Liar Liar is good but I prefer this one.
