question about the mother


why did the mother start speaking in english after a while? i'm curious to know why. it was french all the way till then

Because the mother is English. If you watch the movie again, there's a scene at the dinner table when Juliette first arrives. The daughter asks her mom why Juliette has an accent -- and she says it's because they're Franco/British and that Juliette spent more time in England...

IMHO, it's a movie you need to watch more than once. Subsequent viewings answer questions that were too subtle to catch the first time. I actually like that. To me a good movie is one you want to see again because it made you wonder. Can't say I'd ever want to watch Saving Private Ryan or Revolutionary Road again! Well made, but not inviting.

Also, things get lost in translation. French was my first language so a lot of things made sense right away. But I know I miss stuff if I'm watching something in Chinese or German!

the problem with the screening i saw was that the dvd was scratched and it skipped bits and froze on some other bits. sometimes the sound was there but not the picture and i missed bits of it which really frustrated me. thanks for the explanation, much appreciated
