Shortly after I watched the movie, I was wondering what kind of genetic disease the boy might have had, in light of the symptoms described by Juliette towards the end as well as Juliette's coolness towards her demented mother. Might it have been Duchenne muscular dystrophy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchenne_muscular_dystrophy)?

i think it might be also the case of an auto-imune disorder, with an predictable evolution. but also a muscular distrophy as well,as you say.

The piece of paper with the lab results on it showed an enzyme deficiency of some kind. That suggests a metabolic disorder of some kind.
