This film was snubbed by the Oscars this year. Not even a Best Actress nomination (I thought Jolie was horrible in Changeling). It should have received Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Foreign Language Film (yeah, it wasn't even considered but oh well).
I am, however, thrilled that Frozen River, The Visitor (which I was not expecting), and In Bruges all received nominations. That made my day.
Oh Zazz you are so right! Kristin Scott Thomas' work here probably inspires people to become actors, it had so much, yet was so subtle. I found Jolie's performance to be hammy, one-dimensional and then, ultimately, grating, as the distraught mother in The Changeling, if we're going to compare mothers.
I couldn't believe Kristin Scott Thomas wasn't nominated, though. I can only assume because it didn't get a huge publicity campaign the film was overlooked. Otherwise I believe she would have won, with Kate Winslet in The Reader a probably second.
Both of these films weren't submitted by their countries for the Oscar thus they were both ineligible for foreign film. France chose the Palme d'Or winner The Class (a much better film then I've Loved You) and Sweden went with a sentimental film Everlasting Memories by a previous winner.
