what could the illness have been?
i was left wondering at the end what illness the child could have that kept him first from the hospital and the attention of other doctors? surely his condition would have been known by others (even though she says she did all the tests herself), if only her husband. and surely a parent, especially a doctor, would try to exhaust everything possible avenue to save his or her child. i suspected it was a mercy killing when the child's age was revealed (six), and that it was clear she was not insane, and thought immediately of the robert latimer case, but it's clear her child suffered from an illness, not a debilitating condition from birth
