I've Loved You So Long... hahah.......... more people need to learn French. If you like watching French films, and you like French culture, learn French.

You're just saying that because you're anglophone. Of course the original title is better. Learn French, so you don't have to say I loved you for such a long time, man. Hahaha. MDR!!!
No, just NO, to Mandarin. That tonal language is not influential in this world. Just because it has more speakers doesn't mean rien.

Vous supposez que je ne parle pas Français! Vous êtes un abruti et très arrogant!! Quel âge avez-vous ? 11?12?13?
J'adore la France. Les cinéma est intelligent, la nourriture est grande et la campagne est belle.
But the "lingua franca" on here is English. So that's how I'll continue.
If English speakers wish to refer to a movie, by the title it was released under in their country, then that is their prerogative. It does not give you carte blanche to act like a patronising cretin.
Since you have such a poor grasp of what actually passes for hilarious, why don't you 'laugh yourself to death' over that?
English speakers don't usually call one another anglophone. So it is as hilarious when you call us by that title as when we call the movie by its English title.
Some titles and sentences are hard to translate. "Il y a longtemps que je t'aime" is taken from a folklore song that all French people know. Even when you read it, you can't help yourself from having the melody in your head. It's also a sentence you can say in everyday life. So the transaltion "I've love you so long" is rather good. It was impossible to capture all the meanings of the title anyway. Your post was rather stupidly condescending. ______________________________________ The higher you fly, the faster you fall.
All that is important to me is that it is a great film and to me, more about human nature and people, rather than French people specifically or their culture.
I agree with everyone else that "bordeaux boy" is a pretentious twat. The title of this film is poorly translated for the English release, but only a moron would blame the audience for that.
The phrase "Il y a longtemps que..." might be more accurately translated as "It's been a long time since..."
For example, "Il y a longtemps que je parle français" would be translated as "It's been a long time since I've spoken French" (implying that you're out of practice).
So the title "Il y a longtemps que je t'aime" might be better translated as "It's been a long time since I was in love with you." The title here implies that the protagonist has forgotten how to love because she's been away for so long.
While I don't claim to be a French (or English) linguistic scholar, I hope this post was a little more helpful & less annoying the thread starter's.
Who can take the OP seriously? He is asking people to learn a new language just so they can enjoy French Cinema. That's probably the most trivial reason ever to invest years of learning.
why not just be a nice person and explain for those of us who don't know what the title is instead of being a jerk and trying to divide fans of a wonderful film. we're all on the same side here man.
