They played it too safe...

The original had more controversy than this remake, and I was hoping it would be the opposite. The scenes in the original Footloose between the daughter and father were more realistic. There was talk about banned books, and general idealism against most small town cliches.

This new version was way more "PG", which is the opposite of what the movie preaches in the first place. The only scene that did it justice was when Ariel took to beating that car....but once we get to the church it looses everything.

The only improvement that I appreciated was the different cultures and different races. Something the original lacked.

I was hoping to see a realistic version of the crazy laws passed in tiny towns, but what I got was a duller version of the original. Too bad.

And what I do not understand is here they do not have the 'books are obscene and evil' controversy here, but STILL had Aerial say 'I wasn't reading any books I'm not supposed to', why keep that and nothing to go with it?

the lack of cultural and ethnic diversity in the original added to its realism

That is actually a great point. However, I have never been to a small town where different races didn't exist altogether. Even in the 80's. But you're right, for the movie message itself- that was probably a deliberate choice by the director/writer to further the emphasis on small "red neck" mostly white populated towns. They are in a bubble from the real world. Cheers.
