‘THE MARVELS’ had a -77.9% drop on its 2nd weekend domestically, the worst of all time for a CBM.

In comparison, ‘MORBIUS’ had a -73.8% drop and ‘THE FLASH’ a -72.5%.

It was an OK movie, apparently but I don't think Marvel & DC can 'get away' with releasing ok or ''mid'' movies. Not anymore.

Superhero burnout has most definitely set in. Not for everyone but definitely for ''the casuals'' aka the majority of the audience of the kinda films.

reply

I think the burnout has as much to do with mid movie after mid movie disappointing fans, rather than just quantity burnout. Now, when a decent CBM is released, people assume it's just a continued cash grab and not worth seeing.

reply

I also think that people's viewing habits are changing.

Like why would I, an "average joe" waste money taking my family or going with friends & spending upwards of $100+ on a movie when I can just stream it "for free" in about a month's time.

reply

We've had some huge box office movies this year...they just weren't CBMs. Mario, oppenheimer and Barbie were juggernauts, I suspect because they were something different and not spoiled yet. I'm really curious to see how Napoleon does. I think people miss movies like that.

reply

Almost all the "safe" blockbusters failed at the BO this year.

Even franchises & their sequels or even the "nostalgia bait" couldn't get butts in seats.

Honestly, I wish all these failures bring back the "mid budget" genre of movies.

Cause these 200-300 million budgets as fricking ridiculous.

Well, it will be a great idea to list the failed 'safe' blockbusters. With that list we would see there are at least two very obvious things those blockbuster have in common and that very probably made them fail and that (at least) one of them people don't want to talk about or just ignore it or just play dumb about it. But it is there. I hope someone comes with the list, an honest list, and not some rigged list.

reply

If you want good box office reporting, I'll recommend Dan Murrell.

He can definitely be biased in his reviews but he's a "numbers nerd" & his Box Office reporting is top notch.

Also, can I ask which movie you're referring to that people are ignoring.

reply

No, I didn't say they are ignoring any movie. I said they are ignoring the reasons (or the main reason) these particular movies failed. 'things those (failed) blockbuster have in common and that very probably made them fail), those are my words.

reply

OK, my bad.

Can I ask what reason YOU think they failed? Genuinely asking...

reply

Genuinely need the list, to genuinely answer... That's why I asked for it. i don't want to produce it, so no one can call me biased.

I did a quick Google and found this article for ya: https://theseahawk.org/35253/culture/the-bombs-and-hits-of-2023s-summer-box-office/

And another one: https://www.thefilmik.com/10-biggest-box-office-flops-2023/

Honestly, couldn't find one with ALL the flops but most of them are there

reply

"Something different" means not a franchise or nostalgia bait. That was my point. We are burned out on those.

reply

Ya, I have a feeling that they're not gonna 'learn their lesson'' until they suffer a few more failures.

Why take a chance on originality when you can redo & repackage the same IPs over & over again.

The next 2 years are gonna be very interesting. Especially 2025.

reply

Well done, Kevin Feige, well done.

reply

And you're surprised? I saw this dumpster fire coming 2 years ago!

reply

And to think this studio is still going through with The Fantastic Four for 2025.. I don't have high hopes for this and not even sure who's clamoring for a Fantastic Four movie after 2 movies

reply

The answer is nobody. It'll be just one more flop in a long string of them. Why don't these people just ask my opinion and pay me $100,000 per year for it? I'll save them so much money in the end.

reply

They've been trying to redo F4 since about 2016 or 17 when Disney (greedily) sucked up 20th Century Fox, so for a while it was quite anticipated like 'ooh they've got the rights to XMen and F4' what will they be like who will be the MCU versions etc,, but theyve waited until now when MCU is all abit 'meh' and audiences are falling away
