Just another ridiculous cash-grab

In my humble opinion, the first Halloween (1978) was a masterpiece of understated horror. It toned down the visceral for the somewhat unseen to craft a film that had audiences in 1978 jumping out of their skin. I know, I was in the theaters when it came out. To this day, my wife cannot hear the theme song. It still bothers her.
I have not seen any of the "sequels" to the original except Halloween 2 and 4, and felt even then that they were just making movies for paychecks and I made the mistake of seeing Rob Zombie's take on the story. I felt that it was awful.
I have always thought that Jamie Lee Curtis was very fortunate that the original film helped make her a star. And she has proven that she is an actress with more depth than just a "scream queen" and I have no bad feelings towards her for continuing the tale of Laurie Strode.
But, I think they have led this particular horse to the well too many times.

As long as these movies make money, it's not the end.

Unfortunately, true.

AS OPPOSED TO THE NOBLE PEOPLE WHO MAKE MOVIES FOR FREE?

Like the next inevitable installment will be? ;) Or like H20 was 24 years ago according to many? Or hell, like the very first sequel was in the eyes of some?

But yeah, ok.

Though a horror franchise with many unnecessary sequels, reboots, etc. cuz the movies make money and stuff. Unheard of! Anyway, happy miserable viewing (or just ranting) usual disapproving ones.

So basically, like every Marvel movie and tv show in the last 5 years?

Halloween (1978) was simple but a masterpiece. Carpenter wrote a rather simple story of a masked killer that escapes the mental hospital and stalks babysitters. It wasn’t filled with gore and didn’t need to be .. the tone and theme was very creepy and it still holds up 40 plus years later

I don’t envy modern horror writers. We have seen every plot design and trope a million times before .. most of us are beyond desensitized so it’s difficult to budge horror audiences

The Halloween franchise is done and has been since Halloween 4..

Hollywood seems completely unable to write new horror icons

I agree with this. No Halloween sequel is going to live up to the original no matter how talented, or how hard a writer/director tries. The original was a very simple and effective horror, and what it will always have is the originality of being the first.

I wonder how a sequel that tries dialling down the gore to be more akin to Halloween (1978) would be received by today's audience. Everyone loves the original but it's almost expected now that any sequel must up the gore factor. If someone went the other way with it to make it similar in tone to the original in terms of its violence, would that be disappointing or better received? Essentially it's like imagining how Halloween would be viewed today if it, hypothetically speaking, didn't exist and had only just come out for the first time as some reboot to a franchise already in existence.

I say go for emulating the 1978 film with less gore and more suspense. Look at Prey, it went back-to-basics and was exactly what fans of the Predator franchise have been waiting years for.

David Gordon Green clearly hasn't a clue about what makes the 1978 film a classic and instead his Halloween films end up as total bores to watch even if they try to bring something new to the franchise.

It would be a brave director who takes Halloween in that direction because they are dealing with a heavily desensitised audience now compared to that of the original, who would probably find the lack of gore and shocks boring and uneventful. I'd commend them for doing it and I'd rather see that than what we've had over the years but really this franchise has simply run its course. Not that I advocate sequels, however if they want to go down that route try a sequel or another instalment for a horror franchise that doesn't have one, where you can expand on what came before with something new, like It Follows or The Cabin in the Woods, or even try doing another Halloween III. The Michael Myers saga should be over.

The Halloween franchise is done and has been since Halloween 4

Halloween II far as Michael Myers goes. Halloween III: Season of the Witch as far as the franchise goes. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
