Brackett's line to Michael at the end is so stupid and makes no sense

You have the guy that murdered your daughter 40 some years ago, you're finally able to get some revenge for her on her murderer and he says "Michael its Halloween everyone's entitled to one good scare" lol what? that lines makes zero sense.

It makes no sense in the context of the scene, it made sense when he said it to Laurie when he inadvertently scared her, but how the fuck does it make sense saying it to a guy you're on the verge of murdering?

Why not say "This is for Annie you son of a bitch"? cause that line would make sense and sound like something someone would say. But he just says the line he said to Laurie in the original cause "hehehe member? i said this in the original Halloween member? hehehe". Just completely fucking stupid and cheesy as hell, just dumb fan service that hurt the movie.

Overall I agree. But to play devil's advocate, it's quite possible he's replayed those words in his mind over the last 40 years, maybe a near-guilt at saying that to Laurie just before her horrible experience which claimed Annie and the others, who knows. But I guess that's if I'm analyzing him as a person more than as a character

It's the epitome of how amateur this movie is. It's filled with bad 2nd rate acting and dialogue.

I just finished forcing myself to watch it and all the while I was asking myself what was off: was it the writing or the acting? I'm thinking it's more the writing.

You nailed it with calling this movie amateur. Among other things, the over used "for 40 years" supposedly witty lines show what little creativity was put in the mouth of those characters.

The movie in itself relies completely on fan service and nostalgia to the point it gets cringeworthy cheesy and tiring, the characters are limited to deliver overdramatic lines, it seems like they all try so hard to imitate Loomis specially Laurie on describing Michael and what happened that night like we haven't seen that before, I mean, there are worse things happening in the world and they look like complete pussies being so over the top traumatized by a simple incident that happened in just one night and ended up with the killer being captured for 40 years...

That’s the core weakness of the films. You’re gonna live in terror your whole life because you survived a, very scary, three hour ordeal?

reply

Yeah, I didn't understand why they would put that line in there at all. Why would Brackett remember a line he said in passing to Laurie 40 years ago and then say it to Michael? It would make sense if Michael had said it to Annie before he killed her and somehow Brackett found out about it.

Or they should have shown Brackett saying that line to every other person in the film, like he had Tourettes and then it would make sense for him to also say it to Michael and it would be a call back to the original film.

reply

Agreed, it's really corny. And it kinda makes me feel like David Gordan Green didn't really care about writing any of these characters. He just focused on Michael and the kills.

reply

Exactly. Probably thinking we wouldn't notice how empty and cheesy the dialogues were. Gross mistake.

reply

100% correct. He says that simply because he said it in the original film.

This new Halloween trilogy is basically a muddled mess of references and 'nostalgic' throw backs to the earlier films. I imagine the writing process literally involves trying to hamfist as many references and nods as they can. Lets get the masks from H3, let's reshoot the shot following Michael wandering around the backs of the houses like at the beginning of H2. Lets have Laurie stuck in the hospital for the entire film like H2.

Remember in the 2018 film that Laurie fell out the window onto the grass then disappeared like Michael did at the end of the original. Or the scene where Lauries face slowly emerges from the darkness like Michaels in the original ?

They have rolled out all the no marks who were in the original films. There was no need to bring back so many small bit roles, the Nurse is a good example of this. Why did she need to come back for this film ?

DGGs Halloweens = References to older Halloween films + lame cringe inducing comic relief*.

*Discussions about sandwiches, that big John little John stuff, the kid wanting to do ballet, the BF dressing as a girl. His humor is irritating.

You also forgot the gas station scene in 2018 was a direct homage to H4 when Michael went to that gas station to get his coveralls, then you got the bathroom stall scene which felt like they took it from Rob Zombies H1 when he killed Joe Grizzly. When he stomped and squashed Sartain's head that was taken directly from Zombies H2 when he killed the guy outside the strip club.

reply

Obviously it’s fan service to the original movie, but yes, irl I doubt having a witty one liner would have been on his mind.

reply

If the mob suddenly appearing as actually scared Michael then it might have been cool. But it wasnae.
